Thanks for the (mildly patronising and overly serious) lecture. Try looking up the word 'irony'. You might find that people use it.

Evidently no one else got that it was irony. Either everyone here is thick or your use of irony requires a little refinement.
  • All the time. I'd rather be over-polite than thought of as rude.

I like to think you don't know what someone else is going through and a little politeness can go a long way.

When speaking face to face I always say thank you probably too much. I thank the bus driver as well.

I always thank drivers with a hands up, when I am driving and walking. It annoys me when I let someone go in a car and they don't do the same.

However at work I don't thank via email and hate it when people do so. I get loads of emails to read through and its really annoying when one comes back with just "thank you". They automatically pop up and disturb what I am working on and when there is nothing worth reading/needs actioning its just annoying and disruptive. My theory with this is people have too much time on their hands to do it, I keep hoping that as I don't they will stop but no I they keep coming :rotfl:

Indeed, I should imagine most of us can think of a time when we were down and a small pleasantry brightened the day.

The email thing I find excessive. If someone has put themselves out, or done a lot of work then a thankyou email is fine. But when they thank you for something that too 30 seconds, it becomes annoying.

Yes I don't mind an occasional one for exceptional circumstances I do that myself sometimes but I never just type/send "thank you" I word a paragraph which will include other relevant info as well.

Do you also run up to the end of the platform to thank a train driver when you arrive somewhere?

If you press the emergency button you could speak to (or thank) the driver via the intercom. Saves you running to the front of the train.

I didn't think about it, but probably every day.

I don't know if this post is tongue-in-cheek or serious.
And I'm not very familiar with train travel at all.

But opting for the 'serious', I wouldn't have thought that using the emergency button to thank a train driver would be in any way appropriate.

    It was tongue in cheek.

I did once see someone on the tube mistook the emergency lever for a handrail. The train had to stop for half an hour and I'm not sure why it takes so long to before just carrying on.

Oops! They probably need to check the train fully before carrying on.
Could you do with a Money Makeover?
