Brexit, the economy and house prices part 5

You don't think that the BoE showed any bias before the referendum?
Not of a political nature. Central banks have had to fill the void since the GFC due to a lack of vision from the politicians. BOE has eyes on many balls not just Brexit. Brexit was the last thing the BOE needed to contend with.0 -
https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2018/feb/15/japan-thinks-brexit-is-an-act-of-self-harm-says-uks-former-ambassadorJapan sees Brexit as an act of economic and political self-harm that will reduce the United Kingdoms influence on the world stage, says a former British ambassador to Tokyo.
Sir David Warren, who served in the post from 2008 to 2012, argued it was time for plain speaking on the impact of Britains withdrawal from the European Union. He regarded the potential effect on UK-Japan relations as grave.
https://news.sky.com/story/european-union-economy-records-fastest-economic-growth-in-a-decade-11250315The EU economy grew at its fastest rate in 10 years in 2017, registering a 2.5% increase on the year before.
It is the highest annual growth since 2007, when the economy expanded by 2.7%.0 -
Its definitely an improvement, but average pay rises of 0.1% above inflation is still pretty awful. Still means a pay cut for nearly half.Re: the first quote that was not said.
If inflation has peaked and wages rise as planned then wages will be ahead of inflation.
Since they have been behind for a while, surely to be ahead is better?Read the headline for the point of the post and then attempt a basic grasp of what a caveat is.
You'd be able to make a better argument if you read the article too.0 -

I can understand either argument but not when they're made at the same time.
Either France and Germany are in charge or they're not.
Actually some citizens of the EU28 used to think that Britain, France and a Germany were in charge. There will be no Brexit dividend for Britain.0 -
Sorry but they do know.
You know when you hand your passport over at check-in for your flight?
https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/exit-checks-on-passengers-leaving-the-uk/exit-checks-fact-sheet
(It works at ferry ports etc. too. Mine was taken and checked at Hull some weeks ago when I went via Zeebrugge.)
I am a regular CalaisDover by foreign car traveler.
I am not going to say I know or remember exactly the precise procedure both ways as it is such a simple regular routine.
However I am pretty sure that one way from Calais the UK border person shows my passport to a card reader the French wave me through. Leaving Britain both have often waved me through.
I have recent memory’s of showing three mixed EU passports pressed to the drivers window and being waved through.
I am not suggesting that security against terrorism is not 100% but certainly all the evidence points to the British Government not haveing at present systems in place that monitor closely the actual people by name and destination arriving and departing.
Much of that evidence comes from Government when they have not been clear about the numbers of foreigners living in the UK as well as the need during transition to put in place a proper registration system.
If this were not the case what is all this talk of taking back control of the borders. There will be no Brexit dividend for Britain.0 -

The EU commission and Barnier put back in their box by the look of it. Perhaps the stories of some national governments not being happy with the negotiating style of Barnier had some truth in it.“Britain- A friend to all, beholden to none”. 🇬🇧0 -
Did you see the Boris BIG SPEECH?
I am biased
I missed the first 5/10 minutes but watched the rest including the Q&A.
After such a huge build up in the media it was a big disappointment.
I frankly was expecting him to be statesmanlike and deliver some important words but he is just Boris. Some might like a comedian but frankly not for high office.
I used to find him funny when he was London Mayor but of course I changed when he did his 360 on Brexit.
What did the Brexiters on here think? There will be no Brexit dividend for Britain.0 -
I saw the speech, I found his need for frippery a tad irritating but the guts of it was spot on IMO.
The UK is different to the rest of Europe and we were never going to stand idly by while our quite distinct national characteristics were subsumed by a democratically deficient supranational entity across the channel. I found his exaltation of the nation state generally and our own democracy specifically quite inspiring. Look past the well rehearsed buffoonery and Boris is a very good politician.“Britain- A friend to all, beholden to none”. 🇬🇧0 -

Boris Johnson wrote a pro EU article and an anti EU article and chose to promote the one he thought would advance Boris Johnson's career the farthest.

Of all the the outrageous project fear lies the Leave campaign told during the referendum, the majority came from him. Turkey about to join the EU. £350 million a week for the NHS etc.
He's mendacious, two faced, very willing to resort to cheap nationalism to raise a cheer, and lacking in any apparent scruples or principles of his own. I concur that this makes him an excellent politician by the standards with which Tory politicians are measured.
I just think we can do a bit better.0 -

Technically speaking 360 would have put him back on the direction he was on initially. I do appreciate that Johnnson's political convictions spin around like a compass at the North Pole however.
Maybe it’s like John Major who when his backs against the wall he turns round and starts fighting?0
