Britain leaving the EU after 45 years is probably one of the largest events that some people will experience in their lifetimes.
It will have far reaching effects On people, regions and Company’s.
However one thing is certain no one should ignore it.
During the second phase of negotiations of the complicated withdrawal we might be surprised by some of the areas of people’s life that will be affected.
This Pandora’s box is quite exiting in a frightening way.

It comes to something when even someone like Michael Heseltine says he fears the effects of Brexit more than a Corbyn Govmt!;)

It will be a race to the bottom with price as the only important metric..

    Maybe. But probably not.
Where a free market exists eg food cars TVs Cloths Shoes it is not obvious that people opt for the very cheapest. In fact I would day it I'd obvious most people do not opt for the cheapest options

However I would not actually push for a free market in healthcare because doctors have proven themselves extremely greedy and anti competitive market. Doctors in the USA earn about 4x what they earn in the UK which is why healthcare is so expensive in the USA.

Doctors earn more than they should in the UK but less than they could in a fixed anti competition free market system like the USA.
Do you pay attention to all of the safety recalls the supermarkets put out? They aren't making sure they are safe to eat, they are making sure they do enough to not get sued. As long as the food doesn't kill you instantly then you have little proof it was them.

    NHS blunders are plentiful too
For doctors it's even more subjective. What you would find is that surgeons would turn people away and tell them there was nothing that could be done, purely to protect their statistics. Like the schools who turned away pupils who weren't going to do really well in their exams. Nobody dies under the knife anymore, but you just put their chance of survival from 10% to 0%.

Long live the NHS without it our doctors would most likely rig the system much more in their favour. Doctors being paid £50k is a lot better than them being paid £150k in a non NHS alternative universe

While looking for Brexit news stories to try to get the thread back on track, I came across an impact report on Brexit. It's a couple of years old, but incredibly detailed. I particularly like the chart outlining the different impacts on countries. Even though it is old, it stands up well to being read with two further years of knowledge under our belts:

The link to the PDF is just under the title. P32 contains the interesting graphic I mentioned.

I agree a lot of people don't (for example) switch energy providers to get a cheaper deal, but they aren't receiving a better quality of energy. Like all insurance, you only find out how bad it is when you actually need to claim and it's too late. It's too subjective to make any kind of comparison, so you are choosing blind and the providers know that & will cut their costs even if it doesn't pass them on to you.

The NHS has pros and cons. Whatever happens you're putting your life in the hands of someone who will always have their own financial interests at heart, because doesn't everyone?

It is interesting, unfortunately for leavers it doesn't really have any leverage in there. The EU will have to solve their brexit issues on their own, there is nothing the UK can offer to help.

    Heseltine? Are you being serious?

Many of us fear staying in the EU more than a Corbyn government.

What's so scary about a Corbyn government?

A couple of Brexit related news stories. Will post separately.

Philip Hammond urged to publish government's Brexit studies:
    https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2017/dec/26/philip-hammond-urged-publish-treasury-brexit-impact-studies

Let's hope these are better than the last lot.

That's quite a low bar. They only have to exist to be better than Davis' brexit impact assessments.

I still can't quite believe he's in post.

Gfplux, remember we were discussing how scant the impact reports were? Have found some more useful links courtesy of Channel 4 Fact check. Each link goes to a different pdf.

    Reports linked to:
Fair Brexit for Consumers: British Retail Consortium
A Food Brexit, on food availability and security, published by a few UK universities
ABTA report on impact of Brexit on travel and tourism
Norton Rose Fullbright report on North Sea oil
Kings Fund report on Brexit and healthcare
EU Parliament report on financial services

I am sure everyone is bored of economic's diatribe full stop!

I'm not against him contributing but it'd be nice to get some proper discussion and detail. I'm genuinely interested in what he thinks because there must be more to it than hating the poor.
