  • Budget all your expenses.
If you can, get a reading list for the year and look up prices so you know when you'll be spending money on books (obviously get these out the library whenever possible)
maybe try tutoring? I hear it's pretty good money and since you're at uni you presumably have knowledge you can pass on to Alevel or GCSE kids...

You don't necessarily need more money, you simply need to know what you are spending your money on! If you don't tackle this, then you will still spend any extra money you earn and be in the same situation.

Get a pocket notebook and a crocodile clip. This week, clip all your receipts in the note book, and write down anything there wasn't a receipt for. At the end of the week you will know where your money is going and you see if this is reasonable and you really do need more money, or unreasonable and you just need to keep your purse closed more.

There are many mystery shopping sites. Try another.

Buy a flask, and take a bottle of water everywhere with you. If you keep refilling it and putting it in the fridge you don't notice it's not mineral water.

It's cheeky, but as your Mom obviously lives close do you visit her once a week? Perhaps for tea one evening, or Sunday lunch...

Not a regular help, but go to your freshers faye and pick up free samples of everything you can, and also check the freebies board regularly for samples of washing powder etc.

  • Might get shot down, but my OH started Matched Betting when at University, and managed over the three years, to work upto the majority of a deposit on our first house. It does need to be approached with caution, and many a night of reading the threads from top to bottom three times over until you fully understand every concept of it all, but it certainly pays off!
