Well looks like we will call it a day , paydown the mortgage and put it back on in the spring 😊
Has the other house definitely sold, or are you feeling a bit jaded with it?

Everything will turn out for the best. The house we wanted was on the market, and sold 18 months ago. We didn't even view it at that point because of a huge monthly payment on a car loan. There's no way we could have secured the mortgage. The sale fell through, and here we are in a better position just 18 months later :)

You never know what will happen with the house you want.... or even if a better one will come onto the market. :)
I've got a plan so cunning you could put a tail on it and call it a weasel.

I'm not sure if I've understood that correctly but the house you wanted was going through the selling process for 18 months before it fell through??

. Most people now will want to avoid negative equity if they can, the work/love you have put in probably isn`t on their radar.
Yes, I expect they'll want original 1970s wiring, central heating, kitchen and bathrooms, so opt for the unmodernised one in order to revel in facilities like those their parents enjoyed, albeit totally clapped-out.

Seems logical. I also predict a come back for the Austin Maestro any day now. ;)

Exactly the property we are buying was on the market June 2016 and we tried to view, but a week before we were due to view it was taken off the market as sold.
Fast forward to 2017 and we are off on another recon and it pops back up on the market. The rest is history.

Well presented, but on the small side, and the price isn`t realistic IMO. Most people now will want to avoid negative equity if they can, the work/love you have put in probably isn`t on their radar.

Thanks for the feedback. If it were you what price would you market for?

He's a self confessed middle aged guy living in a bedsit, that appears to spend all day spouting house price crash rubbish over the internet.

He'd never be in your position and I certainly wouldn't take his advice.

Sold for £240,000 in March. Appears to be same road and style, yet extended.

Energy rating probably put people off.

190k initially, see if there is any interest, then be prepared to go to 180k and lower......you might get interest around these points, you can only try. Many people here are carrying big mortgage debt, they see you reduce and a little bit of their inner child gets scared, many have to realise that property market sentiment has really shifted recently, especially since the Brexit vote. If 190k is too scary try 5k drops over a set period, say six months , and at the end of that it either has interest or you accept that it won`t sell at your required price and just get on with living there.

That will be at least £30K of your children's inheritance you'll never see again.

    See what I mean? :(

How do you suggest they "Lock in" this inheritance then?
  • If it's any consolation, you might find it works out for the best. We did what you did, saw our 'perfect' house, put ours on the market and didn't manage to sell in time to get the house we wanted. That was in September 2016. We kept an eye on the market, left ours for sale and in May this year completed on a much better house for us than the original 'perfect' house! Good luck.
