BBFC - Banned a Video Game!!

  • And to all the posters moaning about the BBFC and comparing it to the American board (MPAA) , the MPAA regularly gives prelimary NC-17 ratings to films with extreme sexual content , forcing studios to cut them to get an R rating (the NC-17 rating is seen as a kiss-of-death for films as most cinemas wouldnt show it and it would hardly be advertised) - see American Psycho , Bound , Road Trip , American Pie 1,2,3 , Summer of Sam etc. Films that are avaliable uncut in the UK with 18 or even 15 certs.

I don't think there are any posters who've compared the BBFC to the MPAA on this thread?

I was under the impression the American games classification board was linked to the film one but looking at their respective websites its not the case .
But about half the posts on this thread are basically saying "The Americans got it so why cant we" . This is not America last time I checked , so try a new tune .

I don't think that was quite the point, it's the fact that the ESRB don't even consider it an adult title so what is so different about the BBFC's standards? I really can't believe that an "M" game could have anything so offensive for the BBFC to ban in instead of giving it a 15 (nearest equivalent) or 18.

Manhunt isn't my cup of tea, but if someone is so unhinged that a computer game is going to set them off on a killing spree, then may I suggest that something else is going to trigger their psychotic tendencies sooner or later.

There are instances of graphic violence shown on the television, in films and all sorts of other mediums. It just appears that video games are the latest scapegoat. Evil Dead was banned for a long old time, then suddenly the BBFC decide to classify it all of a sudden. Yet programmes such as Crimewatch use graphic reconstructions, when actually all they need to do is give a brief description of the crime and the criminal. And apparently, as it is "factual" the violence ceases to matter.

My personal opinion is that the real problem here is the lack of any decent mental health care in this country, where people slip through the net, as if they don't exist. So let's stop blaming the easy target, and start doing something constructive.

I dont see any posts on this thread comparing the BBFC to the MPAA. People are aware that the BBFC & the MPAA operate completely differently. Effectively, if the Americans have it, one could simply get it imported. The majority of posts are comparing certificate ratings to outright Ban's.

Couldn't agree with this more, Used to work in Argos for my sins. The amount of Parents that used to come in with their kid to buy say Grand Theft Auto was shocking. You say that this game is only for 18+ but this doesn't phase them or get some stupid comment.
  • When you have indiscrimate murder of civilians being commited by the 'coalition of the willing' in Iraq then popping a few bullets into a cartoon isnt all that important really.

When children are given toy machines guns they will gradually move onto violent video games and violent films. They will eventually end up desensitised to wanton murder BECAUSE it's all in the telly - ergo not real.

As for people who buy these games for their children - well they need their head tested or sterilised. Perhaps a labotomy.

Infact why would you want to play 'kill games'? Most Nintendo Wii games are for good clean holesome family fun but even they are producing 'murder death kill games' to cater for the salvating sick savage types.

There is plenty of research and evidence that 'suggests' that exposing children to images of violence and sex may have longer-lasting effects and there is also anecdotal evidence to support the evidence so it can be proved, if somewhat loosly. Google brings up a ton of stuff from respected Drs and Therapists.

But this is not in any way 'proof'. Despite huge amounts of research and the existence of many groups dedicated to finding this proof, there is no proven link between violent video games and violence in real life.

And the media are far from impartial in their reporting. The original Manhunt was linked to a murder by the press. But what they didn't tell you was that the game was owned by the victim and not the murderer.

Banning this game is a ridiculous over-reaction to the fallout from the original Manhunt game. Because of the bad press the BBFC got, they've completely caved in.

This is a game for adults, and adults should be allowed to make their own decisions on whether to play it or not.
