BBFC - Banned a Video Game!!

yeah take a look out the window and see how society has changed over the years
yobs everywhere, no manners, voilence in the school is the norm now, and it's partly due to these types of video games.
In my day we played monopoly, board games or even got out to the park and worked out our energy doing sports.
good for the BBFC.
You cannot blame any sort of art/creative medium for the decline of society.
if anything, I believe games keep kids out of trouble (albeit not in a very healthy way) they get so involved in the game that they don’t go out and end up bored and being mischievous.
As clichéd as it may sound, its no ones fault but the parents.
the fact that 'nanny' culture has grown hasn’t helped things.
I’ve been told stories of when a neighbour could disciplined a child by smacking them. a little smack now and then is what kept the generations before ours inline and was the foundation of a well brought up person.

It's not so long ago 10 year olds were hanged for stealing apples, huge crowds gathered to witness public torture/executions, children died whilst working 16 hour days, fights and pickpocketing etc were very commonplace, unwanted babies were left to die in the gutter, people suffered from illnesses with very little medication and lived in unsuitable housing etc. Ohhh, it was just so much better in the olden days!SSB0

I dont want to play manhunt or watch any of the saw films so I dont. I play GTA and enjoy that. Its good for a bit of fun, bit of mayhem and doing things that you cant get away with normally.
But before video games and TV was invented was there no violence? So all the wars that have been fought before tv and video games came about are just made up for a good laugh?
I think people (espically the "Do gooders") prefer ignore the fact that we are animals. We have a violent side to all of us. Some more than others. It is how we are brought up and raised which tells us how to behave what you can and cannot do. Most people stick to that but some do not.
Look at the second world war and the totally mindless violence that happend then. People were killed in their millions, unspeakable acts were commited againts other humans. What can we blame for that? Not films/games/media. It is us as a race.JeremyMarried 9th May 20090 -
I'm in favour of this. Why? Because Manhunt 1 was absolute cack. The game was designed, in my opinion, with the sole intent of being controversial so it'd sell. Think I'm kidding? If you have the misfortune to play the game you'd see how badly executed - oh ho! - it is. Dodgy camera angles, a half arsed 'stealth' system? It's just rubbish, and if it wasn't for the gore, it would never ever have got greenlighted.
I think you have missed the point of this thread some what?!
Its not about the actual game, its about the social impacts it can possibly have, about how we should be able to judge what we can and can't play/watch ourselves and not have it dictated to us.
Your views about the actual game play are flawed. The reason for the camera angles is because the whole game was being shot from a big brother perspective.0 -

IF things got banned for being Rubbish, this post would have been censored by now. :rotfl: :rotfl:
I think the point may have been missed, If you want sequals to be banned becuase the first installment was crap we would never have seen Great Sequels such As Mission Impossible 2, Rush Hour 2, Ghostbusters 2 and also Grease 2.........
:rotfl:Ok, you have a point.0 -
All these bans do is populate the game, a game with the word "banned" on it is going to be a seller, it will still be out there in the future as a limited "uncensored" edition.
It's a game, nothing about it is real, its as realistic as reading a book, but I dont see any of them getting censored.
Those whom claim it instills violence amongst people, talk utter rubbish. Murders and robberies have been going on long before some game popped up depicting it. In that sense I would rather someone kill someone else in pixal form, than in reality.
I remember all the zombie movies (BANNED). I watched them as a kid, I watched Clockwork Orange (BANNED) as a kid. I went out of my way (as a kid) to watch anything that was BANNED, simply because it was BANNED.
As an adult, it has not made me into some serial killer or criminal. More the case if I was to commit such a horrendous crime, im not going to use the excuse "Its because I watched a film or played a game that made me think it was ok".
What these do gooders are doing, is telling me that they are protecting me by restricting what I see, as I am not trusted enough in society to watch or act a scene in a movie or game, without having some urge to go about re-enacting it in the real World.
If that is the case, The Beano, Marvel Comics and Tom & Jerry should all be BANNED, they all depict violence of a disturbing nature. PacMan should be BANNED in case I get the urge to take Exctasy tablets or worse, turn cannibalistic.:A:dance:1+1+1=1:dance::A

This cracks me up. How can people say video games cause volient behavour? First, prove it....you can't. Second, violent movies have been around a lot longer than video games, but everyone accepts that if a violent film has an 18 cert thats sufficient, but people seem to gloss over the fact that its THE PARENTS who but their children 15/18 games and allow them to play them. If the parents took more responsibility for raising their children rather than relying on society to do it for them, maybe the problem wouldn't be so bad.
I totally disagree with this, I watched violent movies as a kid and played violent video games and I turned out ok......0 -
There is plenty of research and evidence that 'suggests' that exposing children to images of violence and sex may have longer-lasting effects and there is also anecdotal evidence to support the evidence so it can be proved, if somewhat loosly. Google brings up a ton of stuff from respected Drs and Therapists.
I agree that parents are the problem as censorship is ultimately a personal thing. Child !!!!!! to one man is a fine collection (aka Glitter), to another person he is a pervert who needs shooting. What are the lines between what one person considers acceptable and to another unacceptable?. This is the tough task of the BBFC.
It'll take time, but it'll get to grips with new technology eventually. In the 80's the Daily Mail outcry saw video nasties being banned. I watched "I spit on your grave" the other night, uncut and 18 rated by the BBFC some 20 years later. The film was dire, there was hardly any nudity, no violence per se and you've seen worse with Britney getting out of a car with no pants on. But it wasn't accepable back then, tastes have changed and today the film is released as a curio.
Computer games are a weird thing. They started out as for children but now more adults buy/play than children according to statistics, hence the cost of consoles/games and converging technologies in one box. The BBFC just needs to realise that and accept that some adults will buy their kids what they ask for regardless of certificates. Equally though, like the film industry got the message and toned itself down as it beame more corporatly responsible, the games industry needs to appreciate that the product it now offers may be seen by younger eyes and whilst not the publishers problem, commercially and morally, the business needs to heed public opinion or find shareholders depart, investment dry-up, etc.
I think it'd be commercially bad for a console manufactuer to release something that pushes the boundary too far - parents will eventually vote with their wallets and there is a difference between killing a zombie and killing a person in a game (Carmegeddon got certified by changing the blood from red to green so that BBFC couldn't argue the game encouraged you to kill people....you were killing zombies so that's alright then). Halo, Gears, Resi are all fantasy games featuring 18 rated violence and fantasy weaponry (lasers, shields, etc). MH and MH2 are not fantasy based, they use reallife weapons (knives, clubs, etc) on reallife characters (albeit wearing fantasy outfits). I think that's the subtle distinction the BBFC have made. If Rockstar make them zombies and use sci-fi weaponry they'd get it past, but I suspect it'd loose some it's core play value for that very reason being that you get to kill real folk with real weapons!.Anger ruins joy, it steals the goodness of my mind. Forces me to say terrible things. Overcoming anger brings peace of mind, a mind without regret. If I overcome anger, I will be delightful and loved by everyone.0 -
Child !!!!!! is a completely different issue, as there ARE victims involved i.e. the children. The same could be said about SNUFF movies, that they are real victims, not actors and actress's.
Movies and Games are all about special effects, a simple rating should be enough to ensure its recommendation.
That they can BAN the likes of THe Exorcist, which lets be honest, wasnt that gorey (even in those days). Yet we can watch movies like Saw III, which doesnt have zombies or green blood, shows me just how flawed the BBFC really is.
As a kid, I watched just about anything that was either BANNED or rated 18, simply because I got a bigger thrill out of watching something I wasnt supposed to watch. The statistics in proving that watching such films didnt include me and many others, whom had no adverse effects from it, is enough to at least tell me, they are flawed.
I could just as easily go onto Rotten.com if I wanted to see realism, movies like Banned on TV are rife in the states, and all that stuff is real, but has no appeal to me. But who do the BBFC think they are in telling me what I can and cant watch. As long as it isnt REAL, its less likely to offend me, I should be free to choose my own limitations, not have them dictated to me.
In relation to computer games, when games first came out they were available to both children and adults, but back then were seriously limited in graphics. That statistics say more adults buy consoles for themselves is still flawed. That these adults were once kids with a new console whom just grew up into adults.
Games consoles are and will always be for both adults and children, graphics and gameplay have improved dramatically during the age of the "chip", and will become more and more graphically realistic, but will never actually become REAL.
So long as its not real in either Movies or Games, it will always be special effects and actors\actress's or Virtual and Sprites. Thus nobody has been harmed or maimed in either, so long as that remains the case, that also remains the freedom to choose.:A:dance:1+1+1=1:dance::A
