Opticians tend to assume that as you get older you only read books not computer screens.  I'd always said I needed ones for computers but last time I didn't think to do that assuming (& we all know what assume did) that they had records.  Whoops!  Specsavers changed them without so much as a frown!  What I would really like is a pair of each.  So that is 4 pairs of glasses as I can drive in variofocals but I cannot read in them.  So driving, computer, books & driving sunglasses.  When they figure out how much you need to retire they don't seem to count this now annual expenditure!  I suppose I should be grateful that I've only needed glasses since my late 50s & driving glasses since i was 69, but I'm not, I really do not like having to wear them.  They do have their uses though as they stop my face mask from slipping up over my eyes as soon as I look down a little!  Count your blessings indeed!

I also have a pair of variofocals, a pair for the computer and playing the piano, a pair of variofocal sunglasses, and a pair of reading glasses - the variofocals are ok for a quick read of something but for sitting and reading or sewing they are not much use.  Usually my prescription doesn't change that much and so the driving/computer/reading ones don't get changed every time I have an eye test, but last year there was a much bigger change in both the distance and reading prescriptions so I had to change the whole lot at once - very expensive even with Supersavers 2 for 1 deal!

Only one optician has ever asked me what I actually use my glasses for. But at least that one occasion alerted me to the difference and now if/when I'm not asked I volunteer the information. My laptop screen is about twice as far away as a book or sewing.

The optician at Asda checked when I recently ordered another pair with the same prescription, after the original pair disappeared into the 5th dimension between the sofa Friday night and waking in bed Saturday morning.. I'm retired but use a desk top and I seem to recall they had it in my records as the assistant called the optician over to confirm the lens type.

I'd recommend Asda for the simplicity of their pricing structure too: Specsavers seem to thrive on confusion marketing and add-ons.

Hi, i contributed to the forum c 4 years ago and now have another quibble about specsavers. (I didnt learn my lesson, my fault!)  I lost a right eye contact lens in march and ordered a replacement over the phone and went to pick it up on 29th March and paid £50 by card. However i noticed that it wasnt quite sharp compared to the one i'd lost . I'd been unable to go back until yesterday when i had a contact lens checkup. The optometrist found that i'd actually been given the prescription for my left lens. So, hes ordered another right eye lens but with the correct prescription. When i went to the desk however i was charged for the lens as well as the checkup, £75 in total I quearied it but didnt make a fuss as the woman said its because its out of warranty. When i got home to check terms and conditions i find specsavers have a no quibble, no fuss returns policy after 100 days. Its 80 days since i bought the wrong replacement lens back on 29th March. So, i the rang up and the operator said that 'd gone past their 3 month (?) return policy. 'Three Months, i thought it was 100 days? And anyway i'm under both cut off dates!' So, she queried it with the woman who dealt with me at the desk and she apparently said they would look at it and ring back which they havent done.
I also had a live chat on the website to explain the situation and the person said the only thing hes not sure about is because my lenses are bespoke made gas permeable that the returns policy may not apply in those circumstances.  But arent everyones specs, contacts etc bespoke, everyone has specific prescriptions ?

This is so important.... even though I stressed this point to the last one who did my eye test, I'm convinced the prescription is geared more towards near that truly intermediate use. It didn't help that the first build used the Near instead of Intermediate lenses :(

This caused me another problem - when I wanted to get one pair of the new and one of the old prescription, Glasses Direct wouldn't make glasses to the previous prescription (which was perfect for my use - 3 PC/laptop screens on work desk so true Intermediate use needed) because I'd had a later script which was different, so unless I pay for another test+glasses I'm stuck with glasses that are a bit sub-optimal for what I actually need. Bit of a burger when your employer normally pays for work-use DSE glasses...

I normally go to asda for varifocals but wanted some particular expensive frames so had to go to independent one for these, had had prescription done at boots as they have all the equipment. However when the glasses were fitted, they were useless for intermediate work, and I spend about 10 hours a day on a pc what with work and home. THe optician insisted I needed more distance . Anyway I could not use the glasses and had to go to Specsavers to get new eyetest and get lenses replaced , whole lot ended up costing nearly £600 and still not ideal. Back to Asda for me!

? Thread from 2017?  Btw never had different glasses for computer, decent variofocals do for both, that's the whole point of them.

My varifocals don't do for both because of where my screen is - it's right in front on my eyes when I look forward, so within the distance part of the varifocals.  If I used a lap top and therefore looked down more at the screen that might work with varifocals but would do my neck in - so I have intermediate lenses for the computer, and also for playing the piano where the music is again directly in front of me but too far away for reading glasses and too close for the distance bit of the varifocals, which is the bit I am looking through
I also use reading glasses for reading for any length of time, or for sewing, as the varifocals mean I have to hold the book (or the sewing) in one specific place which gets tiring after a while
