Update. I have spoken to someone at the probate helpline and it is right that they inherit through their father even though he died before their grandfather.

They do inherit because of the genetic line but did they really tell you that the grandfather's estate had to be inherited first by his deceased son before it could be passed to the grandchildren?

Yes! Apparently.. it makes no sense to me either. If their father ( who died 2014) had left a will and left everything to a cats home, then that’s where grandfathers (who died in 2016) money would go!
I have done a wills and probate search for their father and there is nothing in the records.

but but but ... if the grandfather was intestate then:
    Grandchildren and great grandchildren
A grandchild or great grandchild cannot inherit from the estate of an intestate person unless either:

their parent or grandparent has died before the intestate person,

In these circumstances, the grandchildren and great grandchildren will inherit equal shares of the share to which their parent or grandparent would have been entitled.

doesn't say anything about "depending on whether the parent left a will"

That’s what I thought but according to the solicitors letter and the adviser at the national probate helpline (he was also a solicitor) That’s how it works. If that is the case surely they would have to check if grandfathers late wife left a will aswell, she died before both of them.
