    I think it may well just be coincidence that 1.6mm happens to coincide with a dibnah fraction, tbh.

    The UK's minimum tread depth was introduced as 1mm in 1968 (yes, it was introduced as a metric measurement half a century ago...), and changed to 1.6mm in 1992 as a result of a 1989 European directive. Meanwhile, the US still has no single national standard - many states go with 1/16", but some are 1/32", and some have no minimum.

    So, in the US, with some of the most stringent federal car safety regulations in the world, it's perfectly legal to drive with bald tyres in some states? Do you know which ones?

    <snort of laughter>
    No roadworthiness testing at all in many states, emissions-only in many others, laughably lax in the rest.
    Driving licenses given away with cornflakes.
    Drink-driving gets a slap on the wrist.

    No wonder they kill about four times as many people on their roads as we do, adjusted for population.

    <re-googles>
    42 states - 1/16"
    CA, ID - 1/32"
    AR, MT, NM, ND, SC, WV - no minimum

    I'm gonna get me a big lazy V8 RWD and get some slick action on them freeways!

    I have opinions, you have opinions. All of our opinions are valid whether they are based on fact or feeling. Respect other peoples opinions, stop forcing your opinions on other people and the world will be a happier place.
  • But that depends on if your a speedster who brakes a lot or a careful driver, be the latter, it saves your tyres and you will use less fuel.
  • I think one of my tyres may be on 1.7mm so will get a couple of new budget tyres when I get paid at end of month. :money:
