  • Why did you change your name to your married name by deed poll??

Please, once you get a copy of the certificate, keep it with your birth and marriage certificates. You will probably need it to apply for a passport, even for a driving licence.

All they are asking for is proof of identity. You changed your name so you need evidence for that.

I worked with someone who wanted to change her name to that of her partner's when she was pregnant as whilst she didn't want to get married she also didn't want to have a different surname to their child.

However they did later get married

I've used mine a few times, including in America.

Always been accepted in the past for me.. It has your picture on it and it is issued by the government...

I have updated to a full licence about 2 years ago so my advice is out of date, but I've never been aware of even a rumor of provisional licences being unusable as proof of identity..

    I'm confused by this narrative.

Nobody's marriage certificate has their married name on it. If you are Miss A marrying Mr B henceforth to be known as Mrs B, you sign your marriage certificate in the name of A and are described in it as Miss A

Why did you need a deed poll? Was this because you changed your name before or after you actually married? If your current name is the same as the name on the marriage certificate I don't see why that wouldn't have been accepted. I didn't have any problems recently when I changed jobs although I think I did have to show photo ID at the interview too so perhaps the problem you are having is the lack of passport and driving license more than the loss of the deed poll.

I'm a bit confused too. I think that when OP got married she kept her maiden name but subsequently changed it to her husband's name by deed poll, and then lost it.

What I'm confused about is if OP has a birth certificate in the name of "Miss A.B" and has a marriage certificate showing her marriage to "Mr D", and is now known as "Mrs A.D" What is the problem? How does the employer know she didn't adopt her husband's name immediately she was married?

Or is it simply a fact that a birth certificate and marriage certificate are never evidence of identity? I can see why that would be so, just as I don't think a driving licence is proof of identity either.

Off topic but out of curiosity, "how" does a woman's surname change when she gets married? Is it automatic and by default? How does she opt not to?

(PS - my wife generally doesn't use my name which has led to all manner of hilarious Father Ted incidents. But she does use my name sometimes
  • OP I feel your pain. I recently had to do this at work when they realised they didn't have information on file from everyone.

My colleagues that are not British all had ID and all needed documents readily available, they are used to producing them for various reasons. I had nothing :( My driving license was not acceptable.

I found my birth certificate and took it in, but it was the wrong type of birth certificate! I had to apply for a copy of another style in the end.

This thread reminds me I must get a passport sorted. I am not intending to go abroad but need one to avoid this hassle in future.

Yup, I don't know why a provisional isn't acceptable, but sometimes it isn't. It seems to depend on the purpose it's being used for. However, I'll say again, a driving licence of any kind will never establish right to work in the UK. A photo licence may be added to the paperwork needed to establish identity, in support of non-photo ID which DOES prove RTW, but if you want to avoid any hassle with RTW then a passport is the thing to go for!

It changes if she wants it to and starts using it. No more, no less. Although anyone can use any name they like with no paperwork at all as long as it's not for fraudulent purposes. And good luck with ID ...

One of my sisters never changed her name either, and as she regularly made the hotel bookings when they went away her DH was often addressed as Mr SisName rather than as himself. And some of my colleagues have not changed their name on marriage for work purposes, but are known by their married name socially.

I worked in recruitment and found that lots of places would accept a provisional as proof of address (in the same way as a bank statement) but wanted a full license or passport to confirm identity.

My wife kept her maiden name for work too (she's a solicitor). I also frequently get addressed as "Mr Wife's maiden name" but it's never bothered me and I'll happily answer to both names.

One potential "Father Ted" moment was when she was booking a rather expensive holiday by 'phone. She'd approached the agents using her married name. Fortunately I was present. When it came to confirming flight tickets etc. I had to intervene and shout "But your not officially Mrs. MyName, you're still Ms. HerName according to your passport and everything else!"

Otherwise I'd be posting on another board complaining about the excessive charges for changing her name on the flight tickets!

You can't really complain about something that is entirely your wife's fault
