The economists argument would be that the correct price is the price people are willing to pay. Personally, I think it's a scam that Armani charge £2000 for a suit when you can buy one for £70 from M&S, but if people are daft enough to pay it..........

im sorry, but i beg to differ. is it not my "consumer right" not to be overcharged for a product?

No. A right is something given to you by law. There is no right in law regarding what a company can charge.

OP are you forgetting that not all costs are the same? Retailers may have much higher costs in one country compared to another - perhaps due to compliance with national statute, shipping etc.

However many retailers base their prices on "what can we get away with charging people". I still remember when phones were reasonably priced - then apple came along with their £300 phones and ruined it for all of us. As a matter of principle I won't buy apple products given how insane their mark up is and how little they pay the staff involved in churning them out.
    No we aren't!!

Yes we are - although its under several pieces of legislation rather than just the CRA on its own. Warranty has a different meaning legally to what the average person on the street would take it to mean.

This is why people misunderstand the EU directive thinking it gives them a period of 2 years where they can have a no quibble remedy when what it really means is that they should have a minimum period of 2 years in which to take action for breach of contract. In the UK we didn't transpose this requirement directly and instead chose to rely on the time limits set out in the limitation act for england & wales and the prescriptions & limitations scotland act for scotland - which give 6 years from purchase and 5 years from discovery respectively.
You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means - Inigo Montoya, The Princess Bride

Here's an idea. Do your shopping in the US ? Oh wait...... i forgot about the air fare :) of course that applies to US folk doing their shopping here too.

To be honest, it's not something i worry about, i'm sure not many other people are either judging by the responses so far.

so your advice is, either live like a hermit, move to a different country, or troll the internet forums.
    thats great advice....thanks
Ah, you want a magic made up answer I see. You should have mentioned that from the off.

How about: on midsummer night, turn round anti-clockwise three times, saying 'glurrency, fyummency, charge us the same whatever the currency!' That should do it.

If we were to pay the correct prices for these products, then everyone will have a financial gain.

The UK price includes 20% VAT.

The US price does not include sales tax. Americans will pay sales tax on top of the advertised price (rates range from 0% in Oregon to 7.5% in California).

thank you, i will give them a look see. but 1 voice against these companies would achieve nothing.

Thendo something about it, it wont be 1 voice if others sign your petition

Or no one signs it and people are happy as it is

To be honest Im not bothered about it.

The Microsoft store can be cheaper in other regions so I and other people buy from there.
  • You've gone very quite OP.

    Quite what?

$1 is worth ~75p at the moment. Since, AIUI, US prices tend to exclude sales taxes then 1 for 1 pricing doesn't look that out of line
