  • For 5k a year don't touch a diesel and agree about getting something "interesting"!

We owned a Renault Grand Scenic, we think it was called that as it cost a grand every time the MOT was due!

We now have a Nissan Elgrand, didn't learn our lesson! To be fair that has been much more reliable, fingers crossed.

I had an MX5 and it was surprisingly practical and cheap to run, not great on motorways though, quite high revving and noisy. But if you don't do a lot of motorway driving worth a look.

    What about a Suzuki swift.

My wife has had 2. Very cheap to run and mega reliable.

I have had dozens of different cars but only one Renault ( scenic) it was the worst car i have ever had, the electrics were constantly going wrong.

Have had one Suzuki swift but not the current model would buy another over a Renault any day, my son has an Ibiza he loves it and so far so good

Been looking alot at the swift since it has been suggested. Again though, the limited amount within my large radius is so minimal for my budget.

I've seen this one... MOT history looks ok. Thoughts?

  • It's not that they're invincible. They're just less !!!! than Renaults in general. My judgement may have been clouded, but of the many tens of cars I've owned, the worst have all been Renaults. You'd think I'd have learned after the first three or four, but no... I still gave them one last chance in 2015 and bought a brand new one. Here's a little pie-chart of my ownership experience:

Ha ha that's the type of graph you get with "one lady owner" ex-motability cars....

15% lady owner to the shops and back
35% son uses it for work
    50% family pool car...

As per the post above, it's not that Japanese cars are so brilliant, it's just that French cars have a tendency to be overwhelmingly bad. It might sound a bit of a joke or jumping on the band wagon, but I speak from honesty when I say my experiences with French cars have been nothing but negative.
Au contraire :) mine have been positive, more often than not. A 2CV that had a few interesting (but entertaining) issues, and a Visa that was utterly dreadful. But a Dyane, and a Renault 5GTL and a BX which were faultless during my ownership. And an 18TL which threw a driveshaft, but otherwise did a sterling job doing a 700-mile round trip once a week. With my last job, I did a lot of merciless motorway miles in a Megane 1.5 dCi, and it took it all and asked for more. Never faltered. So French cars are a mixed bag, for me.

However, if you don't mind only having two seats, an MX-5 would be a great choice. Pocket money to buy and run, bombproof reliability, and a hoot to drive.

My most reliable car?. A Citreon Xantia 1.9TD. Never let me down in 4 years of ownership. Only got shot of it when the clutch went.

Most unreliable?. Renault Espace. Nice car to drive until the timing belt went 15k miles after it was replaced by a Renault maindealer.

My dad had a Clio. Gave him years of trouble-free motoring.

For a £2,500 budget, how about a Focus or Fiesta?. Or even an Astra?.
