Those people suspicious of leasing think of it in a different way.... its paying for a 'service' that just happens to be a car. Just like Sky subscriptions. When you don't want it you had it back (at end of term) and no hassle...

Exactly. And if your requirements change, you simply chose a different type of service / car next time.

Pretty much everyone gets paid monthly, we pay our mortgages / rent monthly, mobile phone contracts, often electricity and heating fuel monthly, so why not budget for a car like that?

Works for some people, and puts good, cheap used cars into the market for everyone else.

Like I already told you.........my dad use to say "on the never never" it was a common saying.

Yes, it was a common saying. i'm old enough to remember the context.

However you were rolling that forward and applying it to modern finance packages as a derogatory term.

Because once again you've chosen to analyse the guys life and pass judgement on it. He drives an average car but passes your criteria for success because instead he has a nice house.

Not one monkeys do i give about what my friends and neighbours do or drive. If they're happy then great.

Nope, it was an example of different people having different priorities. Someone driving around in a 30K car that is not their own and a person with a beautiful house. It was an observation on what you may see, is not always the whole picture. Hence answering the OPs question. If you can not grasped that simple concept then I can not help.

For many years I drove an old skip to work, yet use to return again and again to the Maldives. It confused many people. People assumed if you had money you would drive a nice car......the world is a little more complicated than that as are priorities. Each to their own.

No I was not. I just thought of my dad and what he would say if he was still alive..............the rest is just bread and dripping.

Foolish isn't the word I would use, think more "susceptible" or "vulnerable". A system of debt, fuelled by desire to be in a higher social class, led to believe that purchasing material goods can move you up that class ladder, in truth it's all an illusion, one that is very profitable for the super rich elite.

I think I've said this before, but I never really got the idea that any sort of house, car, or any consumer goods made you "better" or "superior" in some way.
It either shows you have inherited more, are luckier, have bigger debts, or sometimes even that you have worked harder.

Having a Rolls Royce doesn't turn anyone into nobility.

The whole brand loyalty thing eludes me as well. I try to buy the best I can afford, that does what I want, and gives me the biggest "bang for my quid"
I don't give a toss about any particular make of anything.

At the end of the day, it's a free country, have what you want and can afford for whatever reason you have,

Ah right and your mums "all fur coat and no knickers" wasnt a derogatory comment either then.

Agreed - i like a nice car because i'm a bit of a car nut and sometimes i am lucky enough to own something new / newish and nice, other times its been old and nice and sometimes i've driven old and naff. :D

But i dont think it makes someone a better person or superior to someone else.

Any chav can drive a Roller these days if they've deep enough pockets and likewise everyone knows someone whos loaded who drives some old banger.
