you can also get to Safe Mode by pressing and holding the 'shift' key whilst clicking "Restart".
    (as per my previous link)

Sorry emptybox - should have picked up your suggest earlier. Andy - refresh or reset or is there an easier way to fix user profile?

If the OP can't even get to the login screen, then I would have thought it was more than just their user profile that's the problem?

Having said that, I don't see how they would see the taskbar flash up if they haven't logged in? Unless they are set to auto login?

FYI, OP got to troubleshooting (with recovery USB); System Restore didn't work but I suggested restarting anyway (System Resore always tells me it fails but actually works); then we're going through the other options.
[STRIKE]Sound like Creators Update[/STRIKE]Latest cumulative 1703 update has failed in a bad way after the battery ran out of juice.
  • Hooray - Laptop restored with HUGE Thanks to Grumpycrab (not Grumpy at all) for all advise - It was Windows Updates which activated on Start Up (no usual alert on Shut Down) Battery low so crashed when re started - 'System Restored' on 2nd try - so grateful for access to this Forum - Top Marks
