If a propper shutdown (as outlined above) doesnt shift it then it sounds like a borked user profile.


Can you get a desktop if you start in safemode ?

I think the OP now has the Desktop back (please confirm here!) To check status of windows updates type check for updates in cortana/search and then left-mouse-click the same in the list that comes up.

Unable to check status of updates as have NO Desktop - I have another device that I can access the Internet - Thank Goodness
Laptop still in same mode Taskbar flicking on/off??? shows no sign of 'updating'

I have had the same problem just come back on by holding down at the same time ctrl/alt/delete good luck. Thanks grumpycrab for the info.

You may have to Reset Windows if you can't get anywhere trying anything else.

Start in Safe Mode and choose Troubleshooting from the menu.

You can also Reset Windows from a Windows 10 installation disk, if you have one.

Could you tell me how I get into Safe Mode? An Installation Disk for Windows 10 was not provided by Medion with the Laptop.

Hi - back again. Safe mode. Without a boot disk (no, they don't come with one these days - it's up to you to make your own.). You're going to have to go through this cycle 3 times to get to recovery :-

1. (with laptop powered up) hold power button 5seconds (you should have already tried this and I assume it did not make any difference). Wait for laptop to go off.

2. press power button once; wait for laptop to either come on successsfully OR get back into the error state that you describe; goto 1.

After 3 times you should get this screen :- Tell us when you do.

If you can get to the login screen, you can also get to Safe Mode by pressing and holding the 'shift' key whilst clicking "Restart".
(as per my previous link)

You can download a Windows 10 ISO and burn it to DVD or USB disk, to make an installation disk.
Either download the ISO directly or use the 'Media Creation Tool' to do so.
(it's a large download mind - 2 or 3 GB)

AHHHH. After Ctrl-Alt-Del there's a power circle bottom right (actually says Shut down if you move the mouse over it). Left-mouse-click it. Do you see Restart?
If so left-mouse-click it AND hold shift key at the same time.
