Well this week has been Brisk Breeze Brian, so can hardly be expected to be great. It's looking a bit better going forward though.

Love your post amplifying what went on in S Australia, Z, thank you. I want solar to pay less, to have some independence of my power supplier, and for environmental reasons - I know we're supposedly at "peak stuff", but they're stuff I'd happily pay out for.

I'm also buying some loppers today, as I can't lean over a particular plant I have to cut back the ivy growing at the back of it - but at least I'm not buying an electric hedge cutter, and these things should actually last my lifetime :o blimey, what a thought.

Don't be using the past tense - this is still ongoing. As we move into winter, they're moving into summer. That's their peak time for power usage. Should be interesting to see what happens - bring popcorn. :rotfl:

What do you mean by "peak stuff" in this context?

For what purpose do you want independence from your supplier? Is it for pure electricity for things like computers etc, or just power for things like space and water heating?

It shows how far we've fallen in that this is surprising. Plastic has a lot to answer for.

If you buy quality, you can get a tool the day you're born and provided you don't abuse it, then it should outlast you. In fact it should last at least 3 generations. It's amazing how many people say "I have by Grandfather's X" - where X in my particular case is "micrometers". Of course they're imperial and haven't been looked after, so are not of much use to me - but I do have them, and they mostly work.

Noooo! You're making me think **all** the time :rotfl: All I mean is "anything that's bought". I honestly try not to buy anything I don't need to buy - right down to limping along on a tv remote that hardly works (I *need* a remote because the tv doesn't have buttons :o).

    I'm an untrusting little s*d :D

Seriously, I've always had a hankering to live as Tom and Barbara do :D and I'm retired now, and if I don't do it now, when am I going to do it? I feel a lot more free than I used to, and I want to do it, so I'm going to

Well, that's all part of one of my mottos: "I'm not here to tell you what to think - I'm here to tell you *to* think..."

There is a concept called "Consumer Surplus" which is basically the other side of the coin from profit. In this case, and IMHO, the amount you spend on a new remote will likely by far exceeded by the amount of "enjoyment" you'll get from it.

Or, using Martin's mantra - yes you will use it, and yes it's worth it. Assuming of course, you're not buying something like this: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Marantz-RC9001-Intelligent-Screen-Control/dp/B001DHFNU6/

I wasn't asking you why you wanted to do it - but more what you were going to do with it. What you use for electricity is different to what you'd use for heat (for example) and it's more efficient to pick and choose a solution for each - "one size fits all" simply doesn't in this case.

Initially to stooze my ISAs into the offset using the fact they're flexible to cut down my interest charge. Though it's not much, it's better in my pocket, and my mortgage charges more than my ISAs give.

Hammer my FD regular saver every year as it's 5%. Hammer my Leeds RS as although it's only 2.3%, it's open ended to a maximum of £6,000.
Presumably then top up the ISA's with the matured RS's?
