My stairs creak horribly :( I won't be doing anything just yet, but the carpet I inherited is falling apart too - I'm very tempted to do a total renovation when I get the re-plastering done ...

Hope your week ahead is looking okay :)

In terms of which is more reliable - LED, florescent or incandescent. They all last 20 seconds past their warranty - surely you knew that?

I was a bit of an early adopter when it came to LED lighting and it has been very frustrating trying to keep the lights on. Amazon have actually been very good about accepting returns based on the expected longevity as published vs. warranty duration proper.

I sorted quite a few squeaky floors during our renovations (very straightforward, basically just flooring screws into the joists to assist the original nails). All went well with the exception of one very unfortunate narrow bore copper pipe that was literally 0.5mm further over than my pipe detector claimed :o

Not suggesting you get down on your knees and do it yourself, but if you got someone in, it's a quick (and inexpensive) job.

That's good of them. I take it you've had bad experiences?

I've not moved to LED as the quality is (IMHO) poor. I may try in the future with one of those strips (warm white of course) and a separately bought buck converter. People are going to regret buying stuff with capacitive droppers when smart meters are switched over to measuring apparent power to boost profits. Cynic? Moi?

I'd much prefer bioluminescence as a lighting medium but I expect, rather like OLED, that's going to be premium for a long while.

You have*far* more faith in the accuracy of those things than I do. I'd have given it a far wider berth.

Our initial experiences were bad, but we're now 5 years in to using them and brands are more reliable now. Part of the improvement is probably using high quality (but expensive) big brand bulbs. The Chinese cheapos fitted by our electrician have already had multiple failures inside of 2 years.

The 0.5mm wasn't the error, it was roughly the width of the metal in the microbore pipe

I became a lot more gun-shy after that.

Another fan of expensive carpet :D

Is it "real" wood, or laminate?

Saw my new GP today. What a breath of fresh air in comparison to my old practice...
