Did you just ask for business class 2 or actually tell them you are a takeaway driver. A lot of insurers won't cover delivery driving

Our car was written off in an accident with a pizza delivery boy three years ago. We exchanged insurance details via the police who attended (no injuries but ring road was partially blocked) and they told me it looked like he was covered by two policies - his own and one provided by the company he was delivering for. I didn't know this was possible but presumably police had checked MID(?).

Anyway his insurers accepted liability 100% and were happy to pay up. But I'm curious as we only dealt with one of "his" insurers. Would they have split the cost between themselves if there were two policies giving cover?

Apols for going off topic, but the OP (even if they stay with the same employer) may need to check their cover if they continue deliveries.

(PS - the mistake we made three years ago was when contacting our own insurers we allowed them to get "their" claims management company involved. All they wanted me to do was to make a personal injury claim for injuries I knew I hadn't suffered. They seemed most surprised that I didn't want to commit a criminal offence!)

Very large fast food companies such as Dominoes arrange a separate blanket policy that provides Third Party Only cover eg only covers damage you to other people property but not your own vehicle.

This is partly because insurance for extending a motor policy to include deliveries (Fast food are one of the very highest rated occupations for obvious reasons) is very expensive. It is also because the employer even though the drivers are "Self employed" has a duty of care to ensure they are insured properly.

I too would be surprised if a "Class 2" business use on a private car policy would cover fast food delivery. It would certainly cause a traffic officer (Expecially one on a sting operation targeting fast food delivery drivers) to look further into whether they are insured correctly

Would you be in a union when you're a takeaway driver?

I assume the OP is a member of the Student Union

I don't believe they would get involved in a pay dispute with a takeaway firm. Not really what they are there for.

Quite possibly and would therefore have access to the union's legal services.

(BTW There's no point in engaging with JReacher, if you look at his "contributions" to the site they are generally argumentative without being helpful, and appear to be purely for self- aggrandisement).

  • Traffic police are well on to this and will pull the car for an insurance check on sight.
It needs goods in transit commercial insurance.
This is very expensive and without the correct insurance the car will be impounded and 6-9 penalty points plus a fine.
I do Contracts, all day every day.

No, I don't know how you came to the conclusion that I am a "Troll" I definitely am not. I was only looking for some advice, but to answer your question, 99% of the payments made by customers were made by card as we were provided with a wireless chip and pin machine and all the transactions go straight into the owners account. (Delivery and Tips included)

Thanks to everyone else though for taking the time to provide me with some much needed advice, it confirmed what friends and family have told me, that I was getting the utter pee taken out of me in that job so I decided to leave after my shift last night. People really do take kindness as weakness :(

I guess that I will just have to put it down to a bad experience.

    Many Thanks, Sarah

I think you are being a tad too hasrsh on JReacher there...

I have to say but I went to university and also worked throughout my time there. I had no idea that the SU had "legal services", not least because my SU seemed to be run mainly by 3rd year students who were only slightly less clueless than me!

I also wouldn't have trusted them to offer me sound legal advice in much the same way that an EMPLOYMENT union would.

I probably would have either gone to my parents/this forum or the Citizens Advice Bureau.

I also probably would have sacked off the job and applied for KFC or Tesco.
