Do most people not ensure they are in an environment they are happy in BEFORE getting pregnant? We avoided doing so until we owned our own property and suffered waiting 5 extra years, but that is the sacrifice you have to make living in the UK and with our property bubble.

I would not dream bringing up kids in an environment with damp and dirty carpets etc. Replacing them wont sort out the damp and its unlikely to be coming from concrete.

Unless you know the OPs full circumstances you cannot make those sorts of comments,.

ha ha, is it really that shocking? Isn't it possible to enjoy sitting in the living room, in front of the fire or the TV without having to stuff yourself with food or drinks?

We don't snack at home, I don't drink wine. If I need hydration, I go and have a glass of something in the kitchen. I do enjoy my cuppa in the morning, but we have a comfortable place to sit in the dining room which doesn't have carpet.

Carpets in living rooms is a very British thing which you don't see often in the rest of Europe. My friends who visit find it very odd and have commented on the dirtiness of carpets in the UK as they normally only have them in bedrooms if at all and indeed, don't bring drinks or food to there.

I have had two children. My carpets have been pretty clean over 25 years. Yes the odd accident happens. We also take our shoes off. I just have them cleaned when needed. That said I don't keep the carpets for years and years I just replace. You can probably use a decent underlay at least twice.

I think it use to be a British thing. More and more people now have wood/laminate and even tiles.

Its not shocking to me what you do but we love watching a film with some snacks and alcohol and I just don't see it as necessarily needed. We do all the above and keep clean carpets. ;-]

To be honest, I think OH and I would manage to have some snacks and drinks and still keep the carpet clean, or certainly stop the film and clean any spillage properly, however, I don't think trust my kids would be as careful!

Surprise about the damp though since there doesn't seem to be any trace of it on the carpet or the walls, maybe the 'damp feeling' is indeed from walking on it with wet shoes.

Or, as the OP said it had practically no underlay, maybe its just cold?

I'd just put some cheap rugs down, and I certainly hope the OP isn't going to stop her baby rolling/crawling/tummy time etc. on the floor just because of this!
