Put some rugs down, that seems to be the simplest solution.

What state was the carpet in when you moved in? If it was dirty then, why didn't you mention it to the agent? It's a possibility, of course, that some or all of the dirt has been caused by you and your pets.

I don't think you've mentioned what type of pets you have. Do you have dogs? If so, are you perhaps paying a 'pet' premium included in your rent?

Might as well answer for the op, since they probably won't be back now. In a previous thread it was mentioned that they have a cat and dog, so yes they do have dogs.

I will say it again.................get a decent company yourself. They will come up a dream.

A decent company will tell you what results you can realistically expect and may even do a test patch for you.
  • We are going to have a baby in a few months and there is no way I putting my baby anywhere near this carpet.

    Thanks

Do most people not ensure they are in an environment they are happy in BEFORE getting pregnant? We avoided doing so until we owned our own property and suffered waiting 5 extra years, but that is the sacrifice you have to make living in the UK and with our property bubble.

I would not dream bringing up kids in an environment with damp and dirty carpets etc. Replacing them wont sort out the damp and its unlikely to be coming from concrete.

Damp, fair enough, but dirty carpets? It's usually the kids that make the carpets dirty. Our living room carpet is 13 years old, but it's still looking good and no stains. That's because we haven't had young children in there, and rule of no drink/food. Amazing how you can keep a carpet clean when you have no kids nor pets!!

Saying that, a carpet in a hallway really isn't a good idea in the first place. The stains on the picture looks like the typical one you get from people walking on it with shoes. Again, not something any landlord can cotnrol, even if they themselves would dream of doing so.

Surprise about the damp though since there doesn't seem to be any trace of it on the carpet or the walls, maybe the 'damp feeling' is indeed from walking on it with wet shoes.

ha ha, is it really that shocking? Isn't it possible to enjoy sitting in the living room, in front of the fire or the TV without having to stuff yourself with food or drinks?

We don't snack at home, I don't drink wine. If I need hydration, I go and have a glass of something in the kitchen. I do enjoy my cuppa in the morning, but we have a comfortable place to sit in the dining room which doesn't have carpet.

Carpets in living rooms is a very British thing which you don't see often in the rest of Europe. My friends who visit find it very odd and have commented on the dirtiness of carpets in the UK as they normally only have them in bedrooms if at all and indeed, don't bring drinks or food to there.

I managed to cut my foot without knowing three weeks after moving into my flat, as I didn't know I managed to trail blood over the carpet in the living room, hall and stairs my uncle noticed it before I did. I've cleaned it now but even without food, drink or shoes accidents can happen.

The damp is probably not damp but coldness as there isn't proper underlay.

Of course accident happen, but if you get a professional carpet cleaner within a couple of days, they are very few stains that can't be cleaned properly. Limiting accidents limits the costly need of the above.

Not even a hot drink in front of the telly on a cold winters night? Or a bag of maltesters while watching a film? I can understand having a rule for kids but surely it doesn't apply to grown ups too :rotfl:
