Well, in my experience the best way to use a tablet is thru apps from the official google store
Why not try it? better than your recent experience with a browser
What harm can it do?
As regards Samsung warranty, all they will do is factory reset it and test the hardware, battery etc
You will be no further on!
using a tablet without apps does not make sense!.

I know you are right ballyblack - I am such a slow learner. This is all 'life long learning' for me.
If you see the update I put in my edited post above to AndyPix who has been helping (#29) - I still have the adware window on my tablet. I need to work harder to do (#16) and:
' Open chrome.
Browse to this location :-
chrome://settings/resetProfileSettings
Then click the reset button." Although I think I had success doing it on my laptop I need to do it successfully on my tablet - Post #26 from DoaM.
On that most recent occasion (#29) the adware window came when I was browsing on Chrome on my tablet on eBay - although not logged in - I was just testing after a factory reset. I'm using my laptop to post this now.
I'll wait until I can get rid of it from my Samsung Tablet then be more optimistic about installing, from the Play Store, the appropriate apps. I have done four factory resets now and I think the hardware and battery are all right. With help, which I do appreciate, I'll persevere hoping to track this culprit down and delete it.
Thank you very much for being interested and for replying.

Looks like this is being caused by a dodgy addon or similar
I'm being cautiously optimistic, AndyPix, but I think I have successfully followed your link. (I don't really know how I managed it but it gave me the correct choice to make.)
I did (another) factory reset first of all. I then managed to follow your instructions on my tablet. I then disabled Chrome browser, installed Firefox from the Play Store and (re ballyblack's post) installed the eBay app.
It is early days (should say very early hours) but, so far, everything seems to be OK on my tablet - although I'm posting this from my laptop.
I'll see how my tablet behaves tomorrow and will post again. Thank you so much for your encouragement and help - and thank you, again, to everyone who posted help as it is all really appreciated.
I'll see how things go on my tablet tomorrow but at least I'm going to bed feeling cautiously optimistic, thank you.

Thanks forgotmyname.
I looked on Play Store just now and there seem to be a number coming up under 'ad block browser.' Is there a particular one you recommend, please?
I'm on my tablet this moring and, so far, the adware window (thankfully) has not come back. I have not had two browsers on my tablet at the same time. Is it OK to keep Firefox and have an ad block browser too?

you can have as many browsers installed as you want, there's no limit
side issue - my tab has lost the ability to do a factory resetit's re-flash or bin now....

I'm really sorry about your tablet GunJack. I should be grateful my resets were all possible. Is your tablet definitely out of warranty? I was surprised to find that mine, bought from John Lewis's, is in warranty until 31st October.
With advice on the forum here I learned that, in the circumstances, sending my tablet back to Samsung would not really have helped.
So ...... do you think it will be OK just to download the first adblock browser on the Play Store list?
I'm still cautiously optimistic but, so far, my tablet is OK - just sorry about yours though.

Just an update to say that Samsung Galaxy Tab S2 is working well - thankfully adware free thanks to all you helpful contributors.
Also, thanks to ballyback's prompting, I now have just a few bookmarks and an impressive number of apps from the Play Store.
