The interesting thing about JRM is that most of the people who dislike him struggle to say many reasons why. They rarely get beyond the fact he's posh & sounds it.
Amusingly these are the same people who'd be foaming at the mouth if anybody wrote off a contender for PM because he was poor & sounded common.
But as we all know, it's OK to hate rich people & openly call them Tory Scum. You can even call it "kinder, gentler politics" while you do it.0 -

I'm not a fan of his social views for a start.
Judging his views on environmental matters I suspect he is another old school hard right Tory who views deregulation as the answer to everything.
I'd actually struggle to find many of his views which I would support him on based on limited reading so far.
That said the Tory base will clearly love him.0 -
I guess some people can respect those they disagree with whereas others can't.
That's a fair point, I may respect honesty and straightforwardness, it doesn't mean I'm voting for them if I don't like what they're saying though.
I will also fully agree that I certainly don't think the last Labour manifesto honestly reflected the economic policies Corbyn would like the Labour party to follow, which is also not a healthy state of affairs0 -
JRM is not genuine at all and has absolutely no idea about the hardship and issues people in this country face day in day out. He cultivates a pantomime Lord Snooty persona which appeals to the deferential types who always think things were better in the past. The only problem is the past he wants to take us back to is worse than May's 1950's. He wants to take us back to the 1850's! Like I said he'd be a brilliant next choice as Tory leader.0

If JRM is a Catholic, he has no option but to oppose gay marriage. If he didn't, he couldn't be a Catholic. It would be precisely like being in the Ku Klux Klan but also believing in diversity.
His honesty is refreshing. It is in marked contrast to the attitude of groups such as the Orwellian-sounding Women Against State Pension Equality. Their name would make you think they opposed state pension equality, but in fact, they support it, want to preserve it, and indeed want to extend it in their membership's favour.
Nobody would dare criticise a Muslim MP who opposed gay marriage, so we should extend the same courtesy to JRM.0 -
The problem is regression. The Conservatives have been showing themselves as a progressive party trying to engage with the youth and be seen more of the peoples party.
If Rees-Mogg gets in its a massive issue for the conservatives and having someone in charge who is so open about their views, especially two hot potato views will not bode well for the 'moderate' conservatives. Lets knock the last 20 years of diversity and social progression back.
Abortion morally indefensible in all cases - so you would rather someone die than terminate a foetus likely to kill them?
Gay Marriage - so I shouldn't marry the person I love and get the same legal protections and benifits becuase of my genitalia?
To cut a Quote from the news today (below), should there be a separation of religion and politics and only religiously netural people can run for office in todays multi faith or more commonly secular society?
‘I’m a Catholic and I take the teaching of the Catholic church seriously in matters of faith and morals. ‘Marriage is a sacrament and the decision of what is a sacrament lies with the church not with Parliament.’
He added: ‘The teaching of the Catholic church is completely clear.
‘I don’t want to criticise people who lead lives that are different to mine but equally I don’t want to divert from the historic teaching of the Catholic church.’

https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2017/sep/06/jacob-rees-mogg-opposed-to-gay-marriage-and-abortion-even-after I don't think this guy will get much support from women or young people or gay people for a start. I'm aghast that people vote for him to be their MP. I suppose they must find him novel and funny...bit like Boris....an anti politician politician. Of course Boris is a disasterous Foreign Sec.0

Yet another Guardian story that's a surprise.
I would gather from this thread (and others on MSE) that if you don't subscribe to the groupthink on things like gay marriage etc you are somehow a lesser person!
Quite a sad state of affairs really.0
