Balearics Tourist Tax increase for 2018

  • You mean like those wiseguy tourists who "forget" to settle their hotel bar bill before heading for the flight back ?

I suspect the hotel is legally obliged to inform the local police without delay, and then the Guardia Civil unit based at the airport is likely to ensure that your aircraft home takes off minus at least one passenger.

Remember the Tourist Tax is only applicable in the Balearics, not Spain overall - only Barcelona AFAIK also has such a levy. Spanish VAT is added to that - a tax upon a tax !!! I think it's currently 10% for hotel services.

We paid a few euros each last year in Salou.

I should have checked out the territorial scope of "Barcelona" before posting - you are correct, there is a tourist tax on the Costa Dorada.

The tourist interests in the other Costas appear to be resistant to the idea.
  • Anywhere for example that disgorges thousands of cruise passengers is more than entitled to fine them for their presence!
Not a view shared by the local businesses I would think.

They welcome tourists of all types.

Get the bill for any accommodation abroad, and the chances are all you'll see is a bottom-line figure that you have to pay.

Break that bottom-line down and the chances are you'll see all sorts of funny little taxes and add-ons, local and national.

But because all we usually see is that bottom-line amount, which is the one advertised and we accepted, we tend to just pay it without any questions.

They are the bane of many a lovely place.

Venice is overrun. Will never go there again. Ever, lovely as it is.

    Oh the irony....
