An Electronic Travel Authorisation ETA is also possible from March 2019, looks like it'll be the Isle of Wight for holidays.

Is this tax legally enforceable? What happens at the hotel if you refuse to pay?

Thomsons bumped up the price of our holiday while I was booking by £90, then £20 each tax.

I will avoid the Balearic islands in the future.

The tour operators should be required to include this in their prices. I may take this up with my MP

If it's legal in Spain, it's legal.
  • Although I haven't heard of any cases of people refusing to pay, I would imagine that you would not be allowed to check in to the hotel as they want the money on arrival. The tour operators can't include the price as they negotiate their terms many months before and wouldn't be able to account for changes to the tax or indeed, its removal altogether.

It wouldn't put me off ... I've never been abroad, no idea where the Balearics are (can't even pronounce it) .... not going, ever.

    :)

I am not of the financial classes who can afford fancy holidays, never have been.
  • Plenty of Cities in Europe charge a Visitors Tax. As long as the tax usage is clear it is beneficial

In a lot of countries you have to pay the tax personally when you check out, it can't be rolled into the price of the hotel room as the government want it to be an easily traceable separate entity for collection purposes.

But anyway, no tourist tax wouldn't put me off of going somewhere, it just has to be factored in when choosing a destination/hotel.

That's right, it's very common in Europe. I don't have figures to hand but I know it's been on hotel bills in France and Italy.

Personally I think we should introduce it in the UK and insist it's paid directly to local councils and ring fenced for tourism.
That way impoverished councils that have been starved of cash by central government could use the money to look after historic buildings, museums and galleries which would benefit tourists and residents alike.

Possibly, but he might have just joined mse and looked at topics that interest him without checking the date.

We'll still be discussing some topics two years down the line.

    Like Brexit! :rotfl:

You mean like those wiseguy tourists who "forget" to settle their hotel bar bill before heading for the flight back ?

I suspect the hotel is legally obliged to inform the local police without delay, and then the Guardia Civil unit based at the airport is likely to ensure that your aircraft home takes off minus at least one passenger.
If it's legal in Spain, it's legal.
Remember the Tourist Tax is only applicable in the Balearics, not Spain overall - only Barcelona AFAIK also has such a levy. Spanish VAT is added to that - a tax upon a tax !!! I think it's currently 10% for hotel services.

Anywhere for example that disgorges thousands of cruise passengers is more than entitled to fine them for their presence!

They are the bane of many a lovely place.

Venice is overrun. Will never go there again. Ever, lovely as it is.
