  • It would have to be a huge amount of money to stop me going to Ibiza every year, and even then I'd find some way to justify it!

Even if it was more expensive than a comparable holiday to Elounda, Crete?

    I don't think that's a fair comparison;)

Most countries tax tourists in one way or another. Unless you get a complete breakdown of what you are paying you'll be unlikely to even realise.

In a lot of countries you have to pay the tax personally when you check out, it can't be rolled into the price of the hotel room as the government want it to be an easily traceable separate entity for collection purposes.

But anyway, no tourist tax wouldn't put me off of going somewhere, it just has to be factored in when choosing a destination/hotel.

I've been to Ibiza and Elounda and both have some superb beaches and clear blue sea. If the taxes get to high, Greece is a great option.

That's interesting. I've paid the tax in cash as soon as we arrive at a hotel before [and got a receipt], but I've never paid it when leaving. What if the hotel doesn't offer a receipt or you don't ask for one, the government will be no wiser, and the hotel could keep the money.

The thing that gets up my nose in some countries is dual pricing, ie locals get in for free or on the cheap, and tourists pay well over the odds.

It's shown as an entry on the bill when you check out.

  • I've been to several Greek islands, including Crete, which I really liked, but they don't pull me back like Ibiza does. There's just something about the place which has got under my skin. It's a difficult thing to explain, especially when many people believe the hype about the place, but I'm sure I am far from being the only one, as I'm sure that other places have the same effect on others.

But not if you've paid in advance, which should also show any taxes separately. All you'll be billed for when you check-out is any extras.

Is this tax legally enforceable? What happens at the hotel if you refuse to pay?

Thomsons bumped up the price of our holiday while I was booking by £90, then £20 each tax.

I will avoid the Balearic islands in the future.

The tour operators should be required to include this in their prices. I may take this up with my MP
