Stressed Car Insurance
We purchased a Vauxhall Corsa this year £600, 2004 reg. Before that we had a Ford Mondeo Estate 2002, which had serious problems and was not worth the cost of repair, but the insurance was really low for full comp.
The insurance renewal has come through at £345 for the year, full comp, which also covers a courtesy car and uninsured drivers, which seem to be on the increase. We've been told Vauxhall parts cost more to replace and insurance for a Ford would be cheaper?
We have searched on line and all the quotes come out at roughly the same for full comp.
We are a retired couple, no claims for over six years and do approx 5000 miles a year.
Is it worth going for third party, fire and theft instead, as the car is only worth £600?

Have you got any quotes for tpft, is it any cheaper, the answer is probably not.
If Vauxhalls were more expensive to fix or deal with wouldn't your insurance have increased when you made the purchase?0 -
Insurers view Corsas as a higher risk than Mondeos, because of the claims history.
The cost for your insurer to repair your £600 car is irrelevant to the premium, simply because it'll never happen. It'll just be written off for anything worth claiming for.0 -
You may actually find third party F & T no cheaper that fully comp. Sometimes, for some extraordinary reason, it comes out more expensive.I used to think that good grammar is important, but now I know that good wine is importanter.0

As you won't be ever making a claim for any damage to your £600 car try playing with massive voluntary excesses to see how high an excess you can take to reduce the premium.
An excess of £1000+ may make it cheaper0 -
Looks like we had better start saving for another Ford, shame, so far the car has been running lovely, but there's no point owning a car you can't afford to go any where in,
if we have to spend all the money on insurance. Thanks for all the help, it's much appreciated.0 -

Out of interest how much were you paying previously and what quotes are you getting for a Ford now?0

We were paying £190 for full comp on the Ford Focus Estate reg 2002, now we are paying £345 for the Corsa design, full comp. Bit of a shock to say the least, I know that car insurance has gone up, but that is a bit choking. We've been told a lot of the increase is due to smash for cash claims and whiplash neck claims as well, unfortunately, as the insurers said, a lot of the claims are false, but they have to take people at their word.0 -
I'm paying just over £200 fully comp, protected no claims for a modified Chrysler 300C, including business use.
Surely a bog standard Corsa must be cheaper to insure.0
