Lodger payment on bank holiday weekend

Hi I just wanted to check.

My lodger usually pays her rent into my bank on 27th of the month but it hasn't gone through. I assume because today is a Sunday and tomorrow a bank holiday, would this be right? I messaged her yesterday to say it wasn't shown as pending and when i checked today which is the 27th it still isn't in the bank or showing as pending. I asked if she would make sure it is a standing order that is set up instead of a transfer, she reckons it is a standing order - would it not show on my bank statement if it was an incoming standing order as i can't see those words next to her name on previous payments, just bank transfer. Am i right in thinking a standing order would make sure payments are made on or, where there's a bank holiday, before the due date and would avoid this delay in rent going in?
Many thanks

I always thought that a standing order left your account on the specified date, and that a bank holiday would definitely delay the money arriving at the incoming account.

I could well be wrong about this though.
  • I have a standing order for my rent. It isn't taken on weekend days or bank holidays and just comes out the first working day after my rent is due.

Yes, if it has been set up as an SO then you'll get the money on Tuesday, they are only processed through the Faster Payments System on business days.

Yes, our rent is a standing order and it comes out "late" if there's bank holidays. Our standing order is set a couple of days before rent day, but the Easter bank holiday still messed up the payment date to after the official rent day. Our landlord didn't comment on it though, he's probably used to it. The only payment I know that comes earlier is child benefit, but they must set it up that way.

always goes through late in my experience. nothing the lodger can do about it really. In addition no payments should come out of your account until tuesday either, other than things like cash withdrawals

I have a standing order, moving money from one account to another on the 1st of every month, if the 1st is a Saturday or Sunday, it will happen on the Monday (unless bank holiday).

'Pending' payments as far as I'm aware only applies to payments about to leave your account. Not incoming payments.

Good grief. Rent is due today and you're getting all worked up already?

Open a bottle of wine (a nice cool white in this weather), sit back, and enjoy the sun for a couple of days.

If the money is still not there by close of play on Tuesday, offer your lodger a glass of whatever's left in the bottle :rotfl:) and ask about the rent.

Even cash withdrawals you take out at the weekends don't technically come out until the Monday (Tuesday if bank holiday) they will show on internet/mobile banking but the date is the next working date.
