Company refuses to reimburse job interview expenses

Hi,

I spent ~400GBP on flight costs to fly to the UK to do a job interview for Company X last year, and they have been refusing to reimburse it saying I had interviews with other companies while being in the UK.
Company X approached me first with a F2F request, we arranged the flight and they agreed to pay for it as communicated via email by the recruiter I'm in contact with.
After that, Company Y and Z also approached me with a F2F request, they also agreed to pay for accomodation and the flight back split roughly equally.
In the end I received an offer from company Y and W (no F2F with them), and I took W's offer.
Company X and Z did not make an offer saying they found candidates with more relevant experience.
After sending the receipts and pinging my recruiters for the reimbursements Company Y and Z reimbursed my costs, but Company X did not. I've been pinging my recruiter for a year now, and to be honest I'm getting tired of it, but I do want my ~400 GBP back.

My question is: what are my options for getting back my money from Company X?

  • If company Y and Z have already roughly split the expenses costs, are you considered "out of pocket"?

Also, what industry sees competitors split expenses "roughly equally" when one of them will have absolutely no benefit in it? Seems to suggest a fairly close-knit and uncompetative environment, which could give rise to company X finding out that you have already been reimbursed.... Hardly fair on company X if you ARE NOT out of pocket (whether paid by company X,Y,W,Z or theta) but, legally speaking, you may still be able to take them to court over it.

Is Company X in the UK?

Have you billed the company for £133?

I can see why they might refuse, even though they would be paying a lower amount. They agreed to provide expenses for you to attend an interview with them, not several different companies.

Who says they know the OP was attending other interviews? If it had been me, I would have approached campany X saying something like 'I would be delighted to attend, and as luck would have it will be somewhere in the vicinity at the time. However, there would be some additional costs to attending this interview, which I estimate would be around £150. I would be happy to attend if you can reimburse this cost.'

Given that OP told the other two they were going for three interviews, why would they not have told this one?

Company X were the first to offer an interview, your suggestion is irrelevant.

Somehow, I bet this 'job' is some chair-warming number on a six-figure salary. It certainly won't be for a NMW job where the poor sods there have to pay to get to the interview, pay for the uniform, pay for a pointless DBS check and then do hard graft that actually matters, you know, carers, cleaners, binmen (and women) where people would notice within days if such work stopped.

Stop whining about a miserable few quid.

Making a few assumptions here, aren't we? Sure, it's probably not an NMW job. That doesn't mean it's six figures or unimportant. Pretty sure a junior doctor (basic pay £26k) would be missed. If £400 is a miserable few quid to you, then perhaps you're not in the best position to be throwing stones at other people about their privileged circumstances.

OP, I assume you have emails where the company agrees to pay. Do they specify any conditions, like not interviewing elsewhere? Do they have a HR website with a policy on this kind of thing? Assuming not, I would send a letter before action.

If you had bothered to read the OP, you would see that he has already been reimbursed by two of the companies. The OP has been b1tching over a few quid for over a year.
