Have you ever mistaken someone else car for your own?

In the 70s I had a BL Mini in Sandglow (a sort of gold/yellow colour). One night I parked it in a multi-storey car park with sodium lighting. After I left the cinema, I unlocked a Mini and climbed in, only to see a handbag, some make-up and stuff I didn't recognise. I backed out again, feeling very embarrassed, and found my own car 3-4 slots away. The car I had unlocked with my own key was white, but under the sodium lights looked identical. When you bought a car, you got a long ignition key and a small, square door key. Same as my 1996 Land Rover.iolanthe07 wrote: »Back in the 1960's there were only five different keys for the whole Ford range. (this may be an urban myth, but there weren't many). Driving off in the wrong car happened quite often,If someone is nice to you but rude to the waiter, they are not a nice person.0 -
First car I ever owned with a 'plipper' - I'd parked at the side of the road, and a couple of guys were fixing a car on the same side of the road. As I drew level with them I plipped my car - and coincidentally they set off their car alarm. I thought I was too far from the car, as it didn't open, so plipped again - and their alarm went off. And again. And again. It wasn't even the same type of car!!!No longer a spouse, or trailing, but MSE won't allow me to change my username...0

It happened to me several years ago. After work we had a visiting speaker.
When I went out to my car which was quite an unusual shade of green/blue I found that the remote key didn't work. Battery must have gone I thought as I approached the car to insert the key. I was furious to see a nasty, rusty dent in the offside rear.
As it had obviously been caused by a delivery lorry I went back in to report it to the manager. He was still talking to the speaker but I excused myself and interrupted to report the incident.
The speaker asked me what car I had-"a Volvo."
"It isn't a green/blue colour is it? "
"As a matter of fact it is."
"That's actually my car and the dent has been there for ages" (which explains why it was rusty)
I'm told by colleagues that they had never seen anyone blush as deep red as I did!
Apologising profusely I went to find my car, which I'd parked in a different spot than usual as I arrived late that morning. The visitor had parked where I normally did.
The remote worked and there wasn't a dent in sight.0 -
