Some way to go before Sterling is out of the toilet. Obviously, it's not all down to Sterling - you need two currencies to make a currency pair. £ has strengthened but so has the € whilst $ has weakened.

It's quite a big move in a week though. Carney hinting rates might rise will have something to do with but who believes that anymore? I still think something is 'up' on the Europe front with May's intervention being seen as a sign that the transition out of the EU will be on a smoother flatter trajectory.

Without looking into it I couldn't answer. My previous answer was in the context of what actually took place, i.e. the vote to leave.

It doesn't really matter now anyway does it, we voted to leave, we will leave and my post was regarding the data indicating what the outcome would be in the event of trade barriers for the EU since everyone who supported remain appears to think the EU will not be affected at all.

    No, it does matter.

A lot of blame has been put on the EU for 'only making Germany richer at the expense of everyone else', so lets pull your argument apart and look at this from a different perspective.

This isn't an EU fault, it's a domestic government fault. Surely you can see that whatever the government has to spend on leaving would be better spent dealing with new export contracts, looking after the disabled properly and properly funding our public services. After all if that were to happen we'd all be better off as a result of it rather than waiting on trade deals that we are fine in principal but we all know we won't have for a number of years and may not viably bring the great successes that some of the more overconfident members here believe it will.

As I've said before, it's easier to do business on our doorstep than thousands of miles away, why has the UK never embraced that opportunity?

Given our aims and objectives what level would you like to see the £ at?

Please consider all angles, not just the price of a pack of Wotsits.

The pound reflects uk economic health, you dont set the level of the pound to what you think will make the UK economy healthy.

Anyway at about £1 = $1.50 would have the uk as productive as the Germans

And at about £1 = $1.90 would have the uk as productive as the Amercians

I don't remember any such powers, but even so it's all open to depate. If Scotland really want a power, they can argue for it in parliament, if they win they can have the power. If they lose they don't. Scotland can't really complain about not having powers they've never had.

It'll never get approved though. I guess that power grab doesn't bother you as it doesn't affect you?
Only for two years and then parliament will have to pass any amendments. It seems perfectly sensible. If someone finds a loophole in the Great Repeal Bill and the transfer of laws from EU to UK courts then it makes sense to allow ministers to quickly plug those holes, instead of allowing people to exploit loopholes until parliament can provide a permanent fix.

You're still giving carte blanche to a small group to change laws in any way they see fit, with zero parliamentary scrutiny for those 2 years. Do you trust any of the Brexit team 100% percent with that unprecedented level of power and responsibility? I wouldn't trust them to host a kids birthday party.

There are so many possible ways for this to go wrong, and so few for them to go right. I'd be all for them taking the legislation as-is, and having regular parliamentary readings for any changes. But to allow Davis & co to just change the wording as they feel like is absolutely bonkers.
Hardly worth worrying about. We don't have to mirror anything. We can create our own safety regulations if we want. Doesn't really matter.

Except we've said that we'll mirror everything (because it makes trade easier). So anything regulation that the EU changes, will automatically apply to us whether we like it or not, until presumably we can get a change through parliament.

Say they drop the 1600W hoover requirement that upsets so many, to 1400W, and we mirror it. We've just had our law changed without any ability for us to have any say or veto in the matter. Go sovereignty!

The argument that non-EU countries can sell to the EU without it is clearly nonsense as (a) we're talking about regulations applying locally and (b) anyone selling into the EU has to satisfy EU regulations.

I imagine the UK will be closely aligned with EU safety standards etc just for the sake of convenience.

Davis has requested that the EU automatically mirrors any UK standards and the UK automatically mirrors any EU standards, so the current aim is that they'll be identical (the EU will only approve EU->UK mirroring, there's no way they'll let a non-member dictate their regulations, it's be undemocratic and pretty dangerous).

No. The BoE did that. Interest rates at 0.25% - are you nuts?

    People. Think for yourselves.

Although travelling transcontinental I have avoided transiting through Heathrow for +20 years. I just find the experience much more relaxing in other European hubs. It's just a matter of infrastructure.

Of course you're very likely correct but I have seen some support for the idea on both sides of the Irish border, so I threw it in as a little morsel.

I'd love Ireland to join the UK but even I admit that's not very likely.
