Ookla seems to be the same as your link as it had stored all my results since March, which vary from the 1.20 last night, to 3.24, to 7.67, all the way up to the highest (being 12.69). It is 9.56 just now.
I'll try and find a cable to try it with.
I'm not sure why I would be contacting BT - do you mean I should be asking them why I am getting higher results than I should, or asking them why my connection is so variable? Do I risk ending up with a slower connection? I am very, very wary about contacting BT about anything as they completely messed up my house move last year and have also messed up big time at work - so I'm reluctant to contact them unless there is very good reason :-)
Hence why I would like to move if possible!0 -
Just read on my BT page that I am supposed to have a 10Mbps speed guarantee... I pay for 'Faster Broadband' 11-15Mbps.
I am sooo confused now :-)0 -

I think you're going to have to bite the bullet and call them, somethings not right there.
The http://beta.speedtest.net/ link is Ookla's but does not require Flash which most browsers are dropping and won't be supported by very much before too long. Flash has always had serious security issues.0 -
Ok....so if I call them, what am I saying to them? I'm rather confused as to what is possibly wrong and therefore what I am asking them to do, if that makes sense?
Thanks

BT performance test .
Then Further Diagnostics .Look at the IP profile and post that .
Speed tests are only acceptable if tested via Ethernet cable not WiFi .
Download speedachieved during the test was - 37.75 Mbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speedsis 27.5 Mbps-39.03 Mbps .
Additional Information:
IP Profile for your line is - 39.03 Mbps

As said above, first you need multiple tests at different times using a wired connection.
You've said yourself you should be getting a minimum speed which generally you're not even close to.0 -
I found a cable, but there is no port for it on my MacBook so can't try it.
I'll have to wait for my son to come back with his laptop and then I can give it a go.
Thanks to you both.0 -
The variable d/l speeds MAY BE indicative of exchange congestion issues, not necessarily your individual connection.0

Quite simple.
You're on faster total broadband which is BT's fibre to the cab (using VDSL2) product for line speed estimates under 15meg (under 15meg they won't sell as Infinity).
Sky and others may refuse to sell VDSL2 products to those lines with a low estimate.
I suspect Sky are offering your ADSL2, which is served from the exchange as opposed to VDSL2 from the Openreach cabinet. As the exchange is further from your home, that's why the speed is lower than the speed offered from the fibre cabinet, which whilst closer to your home than the exchange is, must still be in the region of 1800m away.0 -

VDSL Range A (Clean) 16.5 to 11.4
VDSL Range B (Impacted) 12.6 to 4.3
Sorry @emmylou, I presumed given your speeds you were on ADSL, it looks like BT (if that's the package you're on) is your best option unless Virgin is available at a reasonable cost.0
