Sky/MSE offer

Hi
I applied for (and received) a code for the MSE blagged Sky deal at £9.50 pm plus initial set up costs.

I used the MSE Broadband Unbundled tool selecting a speed of up to 17mb (apparently I can't have any faster, despite being connected to the same 'green box' as my parents, who can have Infinity!). It said the Sky deal is up to 17mb.

I currently get (with BT) anything from about 7Mb to 14Mb speeds ( i do regular tests) but when I went to sign up with the offer code with Sky it estimated the speeds I would get as between 3.2-7.5Mb

I do not understand why it would be slower with Sky; surely since the line is the same it should be equally fast?

Please can anyone explain how this works? I am keen to leave BT but not to get even slower broadband than we currently get (son is a gamer!)

Thank you!

Em

I'm assuming sky's own capacity at the exchange end is limited

Thanks for your reply. Does that mean I have to stay with BT to get the current speed then?

    Thanks
  • 7 to 14Mbps seems like a fairly wide spread, are you in a built up area?

Have you checked the likes of https://www.uswitch.com/broadband/ and https://www.dslchecker.bt.com/

Since you're already with BT use the telephone number option with the DSL checker as it'll give the most accurate results.

    Hi Colin_maybe

Thanks - I did that, and this is what i got, which means nothing to me.
It is a reasonably built up area I guess, a medium size town.

Do the numbers mean anything to you?

    Thanks
    Emma

  • Sky's estimate is much closer to the ballpark for ADSL than your speed tests with BT would indicate.

    WBC ADSL 2+ Up to 3 -- 2.5 to 6.5

What are you testing your BT connection with because you shouldn't be getting anything near 14Mbps according to the DSL check.

I have just tested it twice in the last half hour on the broadbandspeedchecker.co.uk and ookla sites, plus BT's own speed checker

The first time I did the other two sites I got 1.2Mbps on both of them - BT came up with 14.9 (although I have always taken their result with a pinch of salt!!)

30 minutes later the first two sites both came up with around 11mbps.

    I really don't understand this :-)

Am I best to stick with BT then?

First off, just use one speed tester for consistency. I'd heavily recommend http://beta.speedtest.net/

Make sure you sign up and are signed in each time as it will save your results. Do tests on different days and especially times. Try and make sure no one else is using your internet at the same time.

Your results are wildly variable which may indicate a problem somewhere presuming nobody else is using it at that time.

How are you connected to the router? Is it hardwired (for preference while testing) or WiFi? Is it a computer?

So I just used that site and got 10.69 (in fact, very close to the other two results which I ran just after).
I ran it on a MacBook, on wi-fi, and no-one else is using anything in the house (I'm the only one here).

When you say there may be a problem, what sort of problem do you mean?

    Thanks

A problem with your connection, although your variable speeds are puzzling. According to your DSL check you should be getting between 2.5-6.5 (usually the higher figure).

Can you plug an internet cable in between the MacBook and your router and try a few tests? It'll rule out any variance with the WiFi.

I think you may need to contact BT and let them run a few tests from their end but only after you have a few results from different times using http://beta.speedtest.net/ as evidence so they can't just blow you off.
