Walked out of job.

I walked out of my job this morning.
There was more than one reason for this.
My question is . . Although I'd been there for 6 months+, I still didn't have a contract so do I have to give written notice? And why is my manager insisting that I have to.

Written notice is sensible and it should be 1 week.0

Because you do have a contract (I'm assuming you turned up and got paid...)
You do have to give notice.

Of course not! Funnily enough though, part of the stress there was being continually told that we could be sacked at a moment's notice!!
One of my complaints has turned into a 'serious allegation' which is not the route I wanted to go down. The new owner's wife is some sort of employment expert and another part of the problem is that I've hurt myself over the last few weeks fighting with a broken freezer door.
I'm not planning on taking anything further - I just want to be out of there.
The way that Owner's wife went all 'professional' on my yesterday, made me regret saying anything.
What are they trying to cover their backs about?0 -
"Written notice" of what? - that you have resigned?
Is it really so hard to simply write "I hereby resign with effect from 24 August 2017", date it, sign it and send it to them?0 -

It was the change of tone and the insistence that I do it!0 -

The change of tone?? - well you were basically walking out. perhaps they want written notice so they can calculate your holiday pay, or so you don't claim SSP, or whatever.

They've known there have been problems for a while - so it shouldn't have been a surprise.
Why do they need my written notice so badly yet couldn't give me a contract or copy of the company policy?0 -
They don't have to give you a contract at all, and they don't have to give you a copy of the company policy (although you should be allowed access to it).0

Because if not you could turn up again on Monday and claim to have been sick or some other reason for urgently going out of contact. Then it turns into a he said/ she said situation and you're going round in circles.
A one line resignation brings things to a close. It's in your own interests as much as theirs to provide it.0 -
You could have written a 12,000 word essay on your reasons for leaving by now....0
