I know they'd be unlikely to dispute it but i'd rather not pay excess if I don't have to, even if it may get claimed back.
I checked my lights afterwards just to be sure and they all work.

If going through the third party would I have to pay for the hire car, since I'm not 100% sure I have it on my policy. I've a feeling it was on my last policy but may not have been put on this one.

you'll not have to pay for the hire car either claiming through your own or the other policy, The at fault party's insurance pays

My advice, contact your own insurer and let them deal with it all, its simplier

Contact the third party insurer and see what they say.

In clear cut cases they will often want it sorted quickly by accepting liability and handling the claim.

You dont need to pay excess and no risk of you getting a bill for an overpriced hire car.

Well i went through my own insurance. They said they have a team/department that deals with this in that it's like going to the third parties insurance but i don't pay excess. It has the bonus of if anything goes wrong then i have their backing/support, so i went through them.

Then on Thursday/Friday the third parties insurance called to say that i would've been better going with them. They can't both be right and since they didn't convince me, i think i've done right going with my own company.

So just need to wait on the outcome now. Phonecall from garage and it's getting repaired, phonecall from insurance and it's getting written off.

Make sure your insurer's "special department" aren't an Accident Management Company.

    Why is that?

    The company is called Auxillis.

They're an Accident Management Company. They used to be called Albany Assistance. Read up on some reviews online. They'll put you in a credit hire vehicle and that's how they make their money.

Personally, I'd go through the TP Insurer direct. They will bend over backwards to help you. They will either use their own repairing garage or approve a repair from a garage of your choice. They will also provide you with a like for like hire car at no cost to you without having to sign a credit hire agreement.

My car was recently damaged by an Esure customer. They approved a repair at my chosen garage. I had nothing to pay and they also arranged a Mercedes S Class through Enterprise for me too.

Now an accident (mis) management company is involved tell your insurance you will deal with the third party directly.

Before you know it you'll be in an overpriced hire car with a risk you may have to pick up the bill.

To be fair in the few times I've used an accident management company I've not had any issues. My preference though would be to always deal with the TP insurer directly.
  • And thanks to the AMC's bloated credit hire charges, you can be safe in the knowledge you're doing your own bit to inflate the cost of car insurance for everyone, not just your own.
