I don't have a wheel wrench, but I took some photos through the holes, you can see the rust on the sides and a bit of rust in the middle.

Nothing abnormal there. They don't need changing and the garage is trying to rip you off.

They're not unsafe but there is a bit if rust on the outer lip there which means the full pad won't be in contact with the disc.

If it was my own personal car, I would fit new pads and discs but I can do them myself and just pay for the parts. I wouldn't go to the expense of paying a garage to fit new ones.

Rust is not normally a problem, they'll rust over just from washing the car.

What's important is the thickness of the disc, you can see when it's worn as there will be a very noticeable lip all the way around the disc.

  • IMO, those brake disks look to be in pretty much the same condition as the majority of cars that are more than a year or two old.
Yes, there is a bit of rust but only in the areas where the pads don't make contact and with the disks being made of cast iron, there is not really any cheap or easy way of stopping this.

Can't see the back though, the ones on the wifes car had worn funny last year and the side you could see was fine but the back were badly corroded.
  • The disks look fine; just replace the pads; don't even ask for them to be cleaned.

They look OK to me. You should be able to reach it with a file / wire brush, and rotate the hub by hand to scrape off anything loose. Where the pads rub, is the important thing ; think of the roughness on the outside of an engine block, compared to the mirror finish on its cylinder walls.

Looks like you had a partially seized calliper to me which had caused a bit of corrosion towards the outside. Discs are cheap enough so it's probably worth replacing them but certainly not at £300.

If it was my car I'd change them but then I can also do this myself.
