I do tend to wander over to an ATM when leaving a country where I'm likely to reuse currency and grab a quick €100 or so to keep for next time, but I don't make it an essential part of my routine.0

I never arrive in other country with no cash. You may need cash for buying something at airport on arrival, for taxi or for tips. I usually take about 100 euros in smaller notes, rest I do get using cards though.
In the rare occasions I have been in that situation, I ask the taxi driver to go via an atm so that I can pay him.
Having said that, I always like to have a few bob in local currency.0 -
These days you can frequently find an ATM in the baggage collection area of the airport so you don't have to waste any time getting cash.
For most countries I wouldn't bother getting any currency in advance. There are a few exceptions - such as Argentina where all ATMs seem to charge at least 4%, so it can be more cost-effective to take US dollar cash and exchange it there.Let's settle this like gentlemen: armed with heavy sticks

I have. It's not uncommon to find ATMs either not working or without cash, so why would it be different anywhere else?0 -

Me too. My less moneysaving friends/colleagues who insist on changing all their holiday money in cash before travelling also know I'll buy back any leftover $ at a mutually advantageous rate
Everything will be alright in the end so, if it’s not yet alright, it means it’s not yet the endQuidquid Latine dictum sit altum videtur0
