  • I do tend to wander over to an ATM when leaving a country where I'm likely to reuse currency and grab a quick €100 or so to keep for next time, but I don't make it an essential part of my routine.

I never arrive in other country with no cash. You may need cash for buying something at airport on arrival, for taxi or for tips. I usually take about 100 euros in smaller notes, rest I do get using cards though.

In the rare occasions I have been in that situation, I ask the taxi driver to go via an atm so that I can pay him.

Having said that, I always like to have a few bob in local currency.

These days you can frequently find an ATM in the baggage collection area of the airport so you don't have to waste any time getting cash.

For most countries I wouldn't bother getting any currency in advance. There are a few exceptions - such as Argentina where all ATMs seem to charge at least 4%, so it can be more cost-effective to take US dollar cash and exchange it there.

Have you EVER arrived at an airport without a working ATM?

I have. It's not uncommon to find ATMs either not working or without cash, so why would it be different anywhere else?

I didn't even realise they made pre paid credit card type things, I have had a look and so will probably go with that monzo card, has anyone used this card before??

Monzo is the future! Absolutely brilliant. 100% recommend.

Me too. My less moneysaving friends/colleagues who insist on changing all their holiday money in cash before travelling also know I'll buy back any leftover $ at a mutually advantageous rate :D
Everything will be alright in the end so, if it’s not yet alright, it means it’s not yet the end
