Measuring Up

  • Thanks Hazy. If renting it out, they'll need to organise curtains, blinds etc I guess and won't want to mess around once completed as otherwise it's rent money lost

Yep good point! I'm already wondering what I'm going to do with all my clothes when I move into mine lol. Might well have to measure up and get some wardrobes ordered pronto!

  • We have just done this before exchange.

A few reasons really. We wanted to see the house again as we were excited.
Also as first time buyers we have a lot of stuff to buy and we have been keeping an eye on the second hand market and places like freecycle, we wanted to be sure anything we do pick up will fit. If the house falls through then worse case we can keep the items for the next one or sell them on for around what we paid for it. I wouldn't be buying anything new until exchange though.
  • Thank you. I'm a really anxious person, Hazy has been on this ride with me before and can vouch for that! I think I just don't trust anyone.
Hazy, I was just trying to convince myself with my latest comment re. curtain poles :)

Aww it's very stressy, I know! You're way further ahead than me, but I'm on the same journey... fingers crossed, try not to worry!

  • Another vote for positive from me. We'll probably ask the vendor if we can do the same when we eventually decide on a new house.

So you can order things? No point in doing it before exchange. Some people like to have things like white goods, wardrobes, etc turn up shortly after completion.

Exactly, so no point measuring before exchange because you can't order.

I can understand if you are looking at exchanging and completing very close to each other. But measuring before exchanging to me means "I want to make sure I am happy with my purchase", not "I need to take measurements before I move" because as you say, you won't order before you exchange anyway.

Don't worry I measured up a whole room on a second viewing :) we are downsizing and most of my furniture is oversized for this house and I was hoping that this being the smallest size house we would look to move too I'd be able to keep my dining room table.
  • Thanks Tori. I think I'd understand it more if it wasn't being bought as a BTL

I had it with me and I took it as negative. All turned out fine but I would say to measure up is often a way of saying they do want another look round to be sure they are making the right decision.
