You need to remove the printer and driver as i described.

    Go into devices and printers
    right click the printer, remove
click on another printer and then you will see "print server properties" at the top.
go in there, click the drivers tab, click "change driver settings"
now, highlight the printer driver in the list, and click remove
make sure to choose "remove driver and driver package"

reboot computer and plug in the printer and windows should pick it up

If the driver wont delete "access denied" then first open up an admin command prompt and type

    net stop spooler (press enter)
    net start spooler(press enter)

    then try again

what is a 'dodgy' microsoft update? printers and other devices become disconnected all the time. 99% of the time it is just a case of switching off/on the printer and pc/laptop

Does the printer itself work, print a test page. When you say unable to access, what happens when you send a document to the printer? Any error messages on printer. From which programme are you attempting to send a print? If, say it's Word, go to print and there should be a drop down box from which to select your printer. Are you able to select yours? Is it even listed?

The printer does work as a stand alone copier - if you send a print job to it says unable to connect but the job is in the queuy.

But from what programme? If you send a print job from Word and you have previously deleted your printer, it does not know which printer to use, so you have to select one from your drop down list.
