You can say that again! I always check at least twice ... once for the actual url & then again for keywords, but it still misses them sometimes!!!

Luckilly there's usually someone around with a good enough memory to remember the original post, who will then post it on the duplicate thread so people can check their thanks. :)
If you're doing the full url that might be why they're not always showing. Some sites change the page part way through, so I usually just do the middle part of the url with the name of the site - that seems to be about 99% accurate :)

  • Hi Loquax, do you mind if I ask how you noticed this thread?
    No I don't mind...

At 14.13 on 18/10 one of my users sent me a message saying

"Thought you might want to see this message I just noticed on moneysavingexpert. Its from someone called Jarrod1 in Bangor."

It related to the original message (which has since been editted) suggesting about would it be ok to copy from Loquax to here.

I'm happy to forward the original PM on Loquax to you if you wish to check for yourself. :o

i don't want anyway getting offended, but please could you check to see if a comp has been posted before.
the last week or so there has been loads of re posts, and if people re enter, they get disqualified for more than 1 entry.

i know the search facility is crappy at times,i have posted a comp before, that was already on,when i first came on here, but now i double, even triple check 1st
    try searching the url
    the title of the prize
or who is running the comp

please don't let it put you off posting though :D

Thanks angelbreeze i was pm'ing another member about this and we both agreed it's getting silly now.People are saying they have searched but they obviously haven't it's just to cover themselves i think. How could you have searched if it's been posted 4 times before and then i can come on and put in MFI for instance and find virtually the first 4 threads are this same comp?

It also doesn't help when someone posts that it's been posted before and then other people come along and say well i missed it first time around like well it's ok to post it again because i missed it.I have missed plenty of comps i've noticed lately that have been bumped but that's life if they hadn't have been bumped i would have not had the chance to win so tough on me i'm not that bothered.

I've found for people posting comps that want to search that if you search the answer then that usually brings up the comp and lets face it lots have answers but if not try searching for a keyword.Like i mentioned on the Amazon bakeware thread i searched bakeware for that and it brought it up fine so not sure why the person posting again couldn't have done this?

    Anyway that's my bit said(for now;) ):D

Thanks Jason, no need for you to send me the PM as I believe you. I just thought it was a bit of a coincidence you straying onto this thread by chance, so its good that its recognised that some people from loquax come on here to enter comps & and vice versa some MSErs use loquax.

If you look at my reply to Jarrold (post #115 in this merged thread) you'll see I was trying to discourage copying between the sites.

I think there is a fine line to be drawn with posting. If you get too "harsh" about duplicate postings, you will put people off even trying to find comps ~ this happens frequently on the freebie board, and I for one would never post on there.
I think maybe it is the way that people search which is the problem, and I really don't think the "clicky" is a particularly good thing. It might be an idea if when you tell people how you searched, i.e. put part of the url in to the search rather than "here". I personally wonder if people are search the wrong search function if you see what I mean ~ possible on the "search this thread" rather than the plain "search".
I must admit, I have been one who has said I have missed a comp ~ and that is because I feel that the person who has posted has at least tried to find something. If you notice people usually post a few duplicates at one go, because they think they have found a site and then are so engrossed in what they are doing, they don't go back and check that they haven't duplicated. and, why would you, you don't deliberatly duplicate post (unless you are the person who kept bumping their own posts ~ name escapes me at the moment)
When you are new to the site there are loads of things you miss out ~ and people are only trying to help.
I agree it is annoying, and I have duplicated many an entry, but they are only competitions ~ chill ~ the addiction is catching up on you.
OK , now I'll wait for the flack ~ I've got broad shoulders.

Very true - I've posted a couple of comps on MSE after searching and not finding anything - I genuinely wanted to contribute to a great site/board...but was told in v abrupt terms I had duplicated....altho someone else then took pity on me and told me how I could do a better search.

It def put me off posting any comps I find, make me feel a right fool !....
there are some v ungrateful/mean people who seem to like shooting people down on MSE......and also some v lovely ones who restore my faith in humanity.

When I first started posting on here, admittedly, I did post a few duplicates, it's impossible not to, but I also spent time, entering absolutely everything and getting to know the rules and way things are done around here. So then you feel like you can post with confidance.
