  • I spent the morning going to different flooring places. I've decided that after all that I don't like the vinyl. The samples in the shop were all dented and scratched, and I was hoping to avoid that. I did see some big rolls of remnant carpet which would end up half the price than what I was quoted in another shop. The cheaper we can do the upstairs the more we can spend downstairs, and now that vinyl is out, all the other options are pricey!
  • I've been looking online and have found even cheaper remnants, so the bedrooms could end up at least a third cheaper than quoted. I still think we'll struggle with the cost of downstairs, but by fitting ourselves we're saving almost £60 per room, so there's quite a bit of savings to be made.
I wish I was confident enough to order it now, but as we don't have the keys yet (and still haven't exchanged ) I don't want to risk it, as it's a lot of money to potential waste!
We've also seen that we can get carpet gripper for half the price from a tool shop than buying them from the carpet shop.
  • I hope it goes through quickly for you.

  • Thanks! Everyone is talking like we should definitely be completing on Friday, so I just hope they are right.
  • We've been looking at flooring options for downstairs and might have to go with carpet after all. Our aim is to to have wooden floors but it would eat into our savings too much, and be a much bigger job too, as we'd have to remove all the skirting board. So now the plan is to get carpet down ASAP, and save up for wooden flooring to put down in the summer holidays (probably not this year but hopefully by next year) I really didn't want carpet but if we can find a remnant big enough it would be a fairly cheap option.

In theory we are exchanging today, so I'm hoping it happens or else I'm not sure we'll be getting keys on Friday after all.
  • We've exchanged! Keys should be available on Friday as planned. It's now getting exciting, as long as I don't think about the mortgage amount!
  • Woooooohooooooo
    Yay. Congratulations.
Can you bring yourself to order flooring now?

  • Just about! We're going to buy the carpet grippers tonight, and will have to wait until Saturday to see what remnants are available to buy, so we can get straight into putting flooring down this weekend. If we can't find any big enough (I don't think we're going to mind about colours, it's the size that's important) we'll have to order some in, and most take a week to come in. I'm hoping that we can get it all Saturday, so we can hire a van for next weekend for the bulk of the furniture.

I've sorted out childcare so I have all afternoon to pick up the keys on Saturday. (Hopefully it'll be closer to 12, but could be much later)
  • Congratulations, how exciting! Good luck with the move and carpet fitting.
  • Thanks! I'm hoping the carpet won't be too difficult, I can just imagine us ending up trying to find a real fitter in an emergency :) hopefully not!
