  • The underlay and the carpets have arrived. We'll be putting the underlay down tonight, and carpets on Thursday and Friday. I'm hoping we have just enough underlay for the stairs too, but we might need to buy a few metres more. I bought 2 rolls, as I didn't want to end up with a ridiculous amount spare, but I think we'll be very lucky if it's enough. I'm pretty sure I can order by square metres, so if the worst comes to the worst we'll just have to do that.
The colour of the carpets are nice, you never know when you buy online how it translates in real life.

I might start going to the new house in between school runs with a box or two at a time, and see what I can unpack already. I'll probably start with kitchen stuff as that room is ready to use.
  • Flooring
Mr S has gone to put underlay in the first bedroom tonight. He had to buy a staple hammer, and a million and one staples (hopefully it should be more than enough!)
We have a problem with the carpet, we have no idea how we're going to get it to the house! Mr S's dad will see if it fits in his car. If it doesn't our neighbour has said we could try putting it on his van's roof rack. The problem is each roll is 4(!) metres long, so double the length of any of the vehicles we might have available. If the worse comes to the worse we might have to hire a Luton van to take it up, in which case we'll probably have to start moving the furniture too, or else it becomes an expensive move! Although we've managed to keep every cost lower than expected, so we might just have to rent it twice and deal with the extra cost.
  • Flooring (again, still, always!)
Mr S's dad managed to fit the huge rolls in his car, and is currently taking them up to the house! Yay!

    Packing
Yes, still haven't really started, apart from putting the content of our linen cupboard in a suitcase. I'm just not finding the motivation to just do it!

    School
We finally have the elusive letter confirming we've bought the house, so I'll send it off today.
  • Packing
I've emptied "the tardis". It's a built in cupboard in the girls room which is actually massive and was full to the brim. I'm hoping most of it will fit in the car, so we can take it up tonight. We'll probably fill the living room with boxes until upstairs is carpeted.

    Painting/flooring
Mr S is meant to finish work early tomorrow, so we can all go up and work on the house. I thought new builds were meant to be easy to move in to but due to the lack of flooring it's actually much more time consuming at the beginning! I might start painting while he sorts the carpet out, as I can just see us getting in each other's way if we're not careful.
  • I've just read how to change the thread title, as it's a bit more self explanatory, now we've actually completed. (I wanted to say moved in, but we haven't)

Exciting times for you, look forward to hearing the carpets are down :)
A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort

  • Thanks! Hopefully carpets will be down by this weekend! Still no idea what we're doing downstairs though! Might have to go with the industrial look of concrete for the time being :)

Mr S has just taken a car full of boxes up to the house.
  • Is the concrete dusty?
My work place had a concrete floor put down when it had some work done and it was horrendously dusty so we couldn't use it until the flooring was put down.

  • Yes it is, I was kneeling on it with black leggings and they came out white! We might have to end up with laminate, just worried about scratches, and spilled drinks. I didn't think it was going to be this hard choosing something suitable in our budget!

Mr S finished work early, so he's gone up with another car load of boxes, and will attempt to put the carpet down in one room. I feel bad because he's been doing the bulk of the work so far, but I have to look after the children, and it's almost impossible to do it up there without getting in the way. I'm packing boxes, and will be the one unpacking them too, so I guess I'm helping a bit. The old place is looking more and more cluttered as I'm emptying all the cupboards, and Mr S's car is quite small, so it gets filled a lot quicker than I expect. I almost want to get a taxi up with more boxes, but that would end up very pricey indeed!
We still don't know when we'll be hiring the van for the bulk of the furniture. I like having a plan, so this is quite stressful as I don't know how much to pack without making this place inhabitable!
