My oldest (18) has just finished two years at college and whilst he looks for a job in the construction industry he has been offered a FT contract at the hotel where he works. He will be earning 18k and already buys his own clothes and runs his car. We paid the insurance and MOT which he is paying us back for at £100 a month but we fully plan to start charging him board when he gets paid at the end of this month. I too will be putting this away and it will be a nice surprise when he eventually looks to buy/rent his own place that he will have a nestegg. I paid rent to my (single) mum plus half the phone bill. It was a struggle on a £5k salary per year plus having to pay fares into central London from Herts. Taught me the value of money though :)

A friend of mine charges her children a third of what they have left after fares with the idea that they save a third, give her a third and have a third to spend. My DS is not too happy about that arrangement so we may tweak it a bit! She too saved the money to give them back when they left home.

Sorry to blunder in half way through a conversation, but about kids paying keep, I,m having a head scratching moment.

As some of you will be aware, my youngest (19) finished Uni at Easter due to bullying etc, he is lucky as he found a job pretty much immediately, but as he was still paying his share of the Uni house rent. We just asked him for a token payment towards his keep (£10 pw) we figured he wasn't buying his own food etc being at home, so that was fair.
He is due to pay his final Uni rent next week and is earning a pretty good wage and I have no idea what he should be paying towards the household.

Any ideas would be appreciated :)

Ps love the name Fudge too

I think it depends on his wage but even if he's on national minimum wage doing 37 hours a week I would expect him to be paying at least £50 per week. He would still have plenty of disposable income and would struggle to find anywhere else to live all inclusive for that price...

    But that is just IMHO.

Of course it is up to you if you save some of it for a future house deposit for him or such like :)

When DD was living at home she paid £50pw which was half the bills, food, etc. As I worked less hours I did the washing, ironing, cleaning (apart from her room) and cooked for her. We sat down and wrote down all the outgoings and came to the decision jointly.

After the dismal weather this morning it has turned into quite a nice afternoon, all the washing has been dried outside, first time for ages.

I too did a little wash this afternoon and it's hanging out. Not sure if there's enough heat but it is windy. It may need a hour or two being dehumidified.

My online banking is all done. :j It's just a faff and takes a little time, no more for another month.

Tomorrow I'm going to make a lamb korma, spag bog and some brownies. I've got raspberries and strawberries and cream! No idea when my friends will arrive as the journey is about five hours for me and they are driving a camper van so it could be tea time before thy get here. :rotfl:

Just hanging on until 6 o'clock for a glass of wine. The stresses of my DM are catching up with me. :p

I think the thirds idea is a good one - also, if one is open about bills & food shopping costs then the offspring can see that one isn't trying to make a profit from them ;)

    Afternoon all.
A bit late from me as I have been half asleep all day. Partly as a result of volunteering at foodbank yesterday and then staying up beyond midnight.

LW sending coping vibes to Fudge.

TA well done for sorting out the hospital appointments. They are such a pain aren't they. My DD has Neurofibromatosis and has quite a few hospital appointments during the year. Makes working and looking after a 3 year old quite challenging. He has it too so sees the paed...child doctor regularly. He also has a birthmark above his left eye sot his eye is checked regularly for glaucoma.

Well DH has heated up the rest of yesterday's cottage pie and steamed some veg from the garden. Dinner is nearly ready. Happy days.

    Have a good evening everyone.

Good evening everyone, thanks to Holly for starting the thread and hugs to anyone that needs one.

Re the board I'm another one that did 1/3s with their kids, we agreed it based on their basic wage so they got the benefit of extra hours. I couldn't quite manage to save all of it for them but both got a decentish sum back when they moved out. In fairness neither ever complained about paying up even though I know many of their friends didn't pay anything. My sister is doing the same with her son, who was a bit grumpy about it at first, however I believe a conversation with his big cousin put the lid on that. The boys are like brothers and my two take no nonense from him, he'll listen to them quite happily while completely ignoring his Mum or me!

I was back to physio this morning so had to be up and organised early doors this morning. At the moment I use a zimmer to get around (on physio advice) or walking sticks if I can't use the zimmer. I've to keep the zimmer for most of the time but try Nordic Walking Poles instead of the sticks. The NHS don't supply these but basic ones aren't expensive so I've ordered a pair. I'm just waiting for the teasing re yodelling etc. to start from my family & friends LOL!

I'm keeping it easy tonight with a one pan meal and suspect an early night will beckon!

I hope everyone has a good evening x

Thanks for the replies - never thought of putting some away for him - dohhhh that's a good idea.

He is generally a sensible lad, so we will have a chat with him, I think 40/50 a week seems reasonable compared to his income, and if he takes up his place at Uni next year he will have an unexpected pot of cash - if he behaves ;)

Thanks for replies re board. I think its going to continue to be an ongoing niggle as DD just won't accept that she has to contribute a fair amount. She thinks the fact that she has to pay for her car and insurance should be a factor in how much she should pay, whereas I think she shouldn't have taken on that expense if she couldn't afford to. She can afford to contribute....just likes buying clothes and going out!
    Never mind....she'll learn eventually
