I used to worry about getting found out that I was a big fraud and wasn't actually really intelligent enough to be studying at this high level. I am doing a MA in social work and am now in my second and final year on my final placement, which I have to say is going fantastically well.

I was lucky and had a brilliant practice teacher last year and interestingly enough discussed this 'fraud' idea with him and have actually come to resolve it in my head and actually get on with the work. Basically, one theory is that we hold negative thoughts and feelings about ourselves that aren't good or constructive for us, because in some way they do give us something - I come to realise my thoughts that i wasn't good enough and would be 'found out' was so that I never really had to take responsibility for myself - if i failed, well then, I should never have been on the course in the first place because I wasn't clever or good enough and the tutors who interviewed me should have realised this, thus making it their fault and not mine.

That probably doesn't make any sense but for me it was like a LBM!! :)

Well done on nearing the end of your MA.:D I can look at other ppl who say they feel like a "fraud" and can tell them the same, if they can get onto the course and do the work then they can do the job.
I think what scares me is the intesity of it all. But you're right in what you say. I often think what you say about blaming other ppl for failures as I knew I couldn't do it in the 1st place. I'm sure as the study goes on ( after all I'm not at uni till next yr and have a way to go yet) confidence in my own abilitlies will grow.!!

Really!!!.. I'm gettin more and more stressed out about it cos I'm not sure how it's supposed to be worded. TBH I was origianally on the 2 yr access but was moved to th one year for reasons that are too long winded for me to go into, so I missed all the ppl that came in to talk about writing personal statement, so I'm in the dark. I'm in collge tomz so I'm gonna try and pin someone down who can help me a little.
Good luck with your statement, let me know how it goes.
    S.x

Only 5.. ur lucky at my course alone there are 10 ppl going for social work at our local uni. I'm looking into other degrees too, I have 4 essays on the go at the mo and wondering if I can keep this up. I don't want to bleat on the I'm a single mom thing but it's true and I have no outside help at all, I'm less then half a term in and I'm so tired, my kids are tired, not sure if I can keep it up!

Don't worry about the amount of people applying to do the degree.
I am at Bath, which is one of the best for Social work .I think there were over 200 applicants for 25 places.
Write a cracking personal statement and hopefully you will at least get to interview stage.

  • The work load at uni isn't has heavy as the access course. Our assignments at uni are staggered unlike when I did the access course, keep at it, it will go by quickly and before you know you will be at uni.

p.s if you want me to look at your PS just pm me

I know the thanks button is there for .. well thanks.. but I like to say it.! I am having probs with the workload at college it's just so intense and I feel I'm in the deep end of the pool and I can't swim. I love college and REALLY want to do it and go on to uni, but at the mo I feel pysically and mentally tired. I have to be up at 6.30 so I can get me and the kids to various brekkie clubs/nursery's and of course college, only to have to do it again at the end of the day. by Friday we're all grumpy.. to say the least. LOL
  • I have 2 young children under 3 so I know what it is like, you just need to be extra organised
