I imagine you have developed some excellent social work skills bringing up a son! Don't play it down, they will be looking for people with life experience x

Actually my life story gets more interesting than that, briefly I left home at 15 due to my mum who emotionally, physicaly and phycologically absused me. I had a very difficult up bringing and ended up in a violent relationship as a result, my ex was in to drugs and left me with 2 children and LOTS of debt, I now raise my children on my own ( I have no contact with my mum and my dad lives along way away).
I wasn't sure how much of that to put in I don't want to play the poor me card to get into uni but do feel my life experience ahs given me a great insight

    You sound perfect!

I would mention your past, but whatever you write, make sure you turn everything round to a positive. You certainly seem to have done so! x
    Gone ... or have I?

I am in my first year of my social work degree and worried terribly when writing my personal statement about my limited voluntary service, I shouldn't have.
The fact that I am a mature student with two children has given me a huge amount of relevant experience that I found hard to think of at the time, but at interview stage they really seemed to take on board.
With regards to your voluntary service could you do something within your children's nursery/school on your day off.
I was fortunate that my youngest attended a surestart nursery so i was able to get involved with that and university seemed fine with it even though others on my course have had tons of experience.
    Good luck!

I am about to go out for the day now but I will come back to this later, honestly think positively you have far more experience than you think.

  • Hiya,
You’ve got loads of experience. I’m in my second year of the social work degree and you've got more than me when i started. Don’t be intimidated by other people that are applying, Some people have loads of experience and are crap at talking to people, empathy, basic common sense. They tend to be more important, as long as you’re keen to learn.

I felt totally out of my depth when i started my course, everyone else seemed so much more experienced, when we talked about that first day later they said that i appeared confident & had loads of experience. Everyone feels vulnerable at first. It takes a lot emotionally, but sounds like you’re a strong person. A positive attitude and a kind heart will get you far.

For your personal statement...tell your story, but with the positive spin. Show what you’ve learnt from it.

Oh, and shameless plug but.... Girlguiding uk is always looking for volunteers....:-)

    Good Luck,
    Kirstie.

Example of things i put into my personal statement, were the fact that i did my access course and worked part time i also have two children-i expanded on this to show my understanding of time management, my reason for coming into this as a mature student-my ability to commit fully now the boys are at school etc.
My reasons for wanting to study Social work, i think for me this was the hardest because you don't want to sound "fluffy" as my tutor put it!
Please feel free to pm me- i could probably dig out some sections of my draft statement if you wanted to read bits.
