Not many people have the time available to reach typical Brit hot summer holiday destinations. I looked at driving to Greece to visit a friend. Although the journey would definitely have been part of the experience, it was going to take several days.

I have driven to Southern Spain and France and even that needs an overnight stop. Possibly two if you don't live in the Sarf. The best thing about driving yourself is that you have your own car as transport when you get there.

Why this obsession with the car?

Get yourself to a gateway port; relax for a few hours; board an overnight train, eat dinner in the restaurant and sleep; by the time you have finished breakfast the following morning you will be there.

Another solution, of course, would be to use ferries or Eurostar to enter the Schengen area, and then fly. Just about the only convenient way to get to Greece.

I think the problem is LEAVING Greece not entering.:rotfl:

It's coming back that appears to be the problem. Another tip not in the article is if you are booked on a package tour don't take the return transfer included - book your own (taxi or minibus) and have it arrive early before all the coaches for the UK flights get there.

 And then what do I do?
  • Anyone who travels to the Med for a holiday in August needs their head examined.
    There, I said it.
Seriously - the weather is always sweltering, everywhere is crowded, you pay full whack and British Airways staff always go on strike.
While we're at it who in their right mind flies with BA these days ?
Tawdry service, rude staff, manky planes and a good probability your flight will be delayed by strike action.

I remember as a kid, I enjoyed the holidays in the UK better than the ones abroad. Especially on the coast, nothing better than the lure of the amusements/chips/ice-cream etc.

Having said that I've also had some good flights abroad and luckily have never been delayed seriously. I reckon that would do my nut in.

Or just get to the airport early.

No amount of passport control delays would make me take a summer holiday in the UK, I'm looking out of my window now at it's a miserable rainy day, holidays here turn in to very expensive trips when you have to pay an arm and a leg to visit anything indoors to keep your family occupied, dry and warm.

I totally agree!! I got fed up of rain ruining UK holidays and looking forward to a week in the sun is the highlight of my year and if it takes me 2 hours or so to get through security that is a small price to pay to get out of this rain sodden dump!!!

Just wonder why you wouldn't emigrate?

So allegedly in some cases airlines are advising leaving 3+ hours slack at the airport. Include the transfers at each end, the flight time itself, passport control & baggage reclaim (if you use it)...
