Just stay in the UK, enjoy the rain and avoid the aggro at the airports, BA systems meltdowns, car hire desks making stuff up and fiddling your credit card, fake holiday villas, hawkers, sunburn etc. and support businesses here at the same time.

Or just get to the airport early.

No amount of passport control delays would make me take a summer holiday in the UK, I'm looking out of my window now at it's a miserable rainy day, holidays here turn in to very expensive trips when you have to pay an arm and a leg to visit anything indoors to keep your family occupied, dry and warm.

One more reason to take Eurostar. Or the ferries...

Back when I started travelling, flights were only for the super-rich and the boat-ride across the channel was a valued part of the experience. Perhaps it is time to revisit that old tradition...

Alternatively everyone pays an arm and a leg to go to the med to 'enjoy' 40 degree plus temperatures in August.

Nope, I don't pay an arm and a leg to go anywhere in the world and I don't go where the crowds go. It's all very doable at a reasonable price for the canny traveller.

I went to Devon in August two years ago, for ten days, it rained Every. Single. Day. Never again.

I never pay an arm and a leg to go abroad.

one of our most expensive holidays was to Devon in a caravan in August many years ago when my son was small.

It rained every day, so had to pay to do something inside each day (until we gave up and came home early after getting no sleep due to the constant hammering of rain on the van all night)

Just get to the airport early its not hard

Likewise for us. The only trouble is distance - we have to allow a day each side to reach the blooming ferries!

Not many people have the time available to reach typical Brit hot summer holiday destinations. I looked at driving to Greece to visit a friend. Although the journey would definitely have been part of the experience, it was going to take several days.

I have driven to Southern Spain and France and even that needs an overnight stop. Possibly two if you don't live in the Sarf. The best thing about driving yourself is that you have your own car as transport when you get there.

We did a few road trips when the children were younger, one to the Italian lakes, one to Switzerland and one to south of France. We chose the stopping off points with as much care as we chose the final destination. We planned it so that we only drove for a couple of hours in the morning, stopped for a long lazy lunch then a couple of hours in the afternoon. Those were great holidays.

I am posting from Lancaster, which is a long way from Dover! The magic trick is in three words: North Sea Ferries.
