As you say it is interesting.
I have started thinking very hard about what comes in.
I am working towards a much more streamlined and long lasting wardrobe.
I am getting rid of objects that I do not need.
Like you there I decided to donate rather than sell (on the whole) as the priority is getting stuff out

    Have a good Sunday

I think this says it all in a nutshell.

My clutter bug bear at the moment is clothes and this is because I have these in several different sizes due to the fact my weight has spiralled up over the last few years. I'm really trying now to lose this fat, not only for health reasons but so I can get rid of the majority of stuff that has accumulated as I hopefully slim down into different sizes. I'm a great fan of Project 333 where every three months you pick just 33 things from your wardrobe to wear for that period. It gives you impetus to create a good capsule wardrobe and discard what isn't necessary. Oh for the day when all the unnecessary clothing is finally gone from my home when I'm slimmer!:(

Thanks Redo, really good point about changing what comes in not just what goes out.

I was also thinking about this today, I found myself stroking a fake fur throw in Sainbugs which was beautiful but artificial fibres and won't last. That's quite apart from how many throws/ blankets I need, even if I use the excuse of having them instead of more heating. I think it's only just sinking in that owning the house means I have much more control of how it is organised and what happens next, so I really don't need to keep things 'in case I need them in the next house and can't afford them then' and I have already got the place furnished in a way I like, rather than the gradual erosion of awful stuff from landlords that I used to do. I persuaded myself not to buy it by deciding for that price I'd much rather have the pure wool blanket on my wish list - sustainable, less flammable, British, longer lasting and still gorgeous :D

It's taken us a lot of years to reach the point that we now have - that of spending more money on stuff that will last rather than the essential "buy something cheap because that's all we have to spend". With clothes I try to buy reasonable quality in coats and footwear, but things like t-shirts and basic tops I buy cheap and replace often as I find even pricier ones don't last and look good for long. I do vary this slightly - for coloured stuff I tend to opt for M&S level "basic" items which will last a little longer, but for white or black I buy the cheapest as I know those need replacing more often regardless. As we're replacing appliances and things like that now we're tending to buy "quality" makes - when we did the kitchen the new dishwasher was Bosch and the Oven is Zanussi.

Seasidegal I hate to disillusion you but since I've got back to my "proper" size I've found myself buying a lot more clothes than before, because I actually don't mind the way I look in them any more so shopping is slightly more pleasurable than it was! :rotfl: I have also currently retained some stuff from when I was bigger due to the fear of injury or illness stopping me exercising again and meaning I put weight back on - I'm not sure how long I'll need before I feel comfortable to let some of that stuff go. Ideally the space taken up in the top of the second wardrobe with those things would eventually be where I'd put "out of season" clothes as I actually seem to have more stuff that is "seasonal" now.

Redo I love Welshcakes and you've just reminded me that we've not had them for AGES!

EH - The trap that I definitely DO NOT want to fall back into is buying more clothes than I need that I have nowhere to store! I've always liked clothes, but the one positive thing I can think of in being overweight over the last few years is that I am unable to fit into "designer" clothes. I think if I had been my ideal weight I would have splurged out on these and my end debt position would have been quite a bit larger than it turned out to be! It's early days yet, but the diet is going ok and the plan is to offload the clothes as they become too big and once I get to a weight I'm comfortable with then the more "quality" capsule wardrobe would come into being. By "quality" I don't mean designer (most designer diffusion lines are no better than the high street brands, unless you go very high end). In addition, the industry I work in has gone more "casual" over the years so whereas before I used to wear more skirt/trouser suits, now I wear the same sort of clothes to work that I do at home. So going forward I won't need two types of clothing. I will be over the moon once I can get rid the stuff that lives under the bed and just contain my clothing to my wardrobe (although I will still rotate summer/winter shoes boots in the suitcase under the bed as I have nowhere else to put them!).

  • Just to add to the lose weight thing, I've actually bought far less since I've been thinner. It's less tempting to buy things I don't need or even like very much just because they vaguely fit. Have to admit to buying a pair of size 8 jeans, just because I could, but that is it. I still hate clothes shopping, but it's less depressing - it fits but I don't like it, rather than the self loathing of the old days. They also take up less storage space, honestly those jeans are tiny compared to those I owned in my warmer but chubbier days pre SW and paleo light.

My project work is hideously busy, and I am worried about travel and snow. It's falling steadily now, and the village just grinds to a halt usually. Nipped into the co-op for bread for packed lunches, and noticed a real lack of milk already. Luckily I only have a drop of skim in my morning tea so I'm alright Jack.

Haha Redo YES to clothes taking up less space - it had never occurred to me before but I can pack a LOT lighter for going away now, it's astonishing! Funny that you forget stuff like that!

Definitely no risk of me going down the designer togs route Seaside - that sort of thing has never appealed at all, thankfully!

I think now that I've built up more stuff that I can wear my spend will drop - there are still oddments I could do with but nothing desperate, whereas this time last year and into spring I was faced with practically having nothing to wear - quite literally - as none of my old stuff fitted. :o

I plan to buy no clothes whatsoever this year part from underwear which I know I will need. Had a clothes sort at the weekend and I have more than plenty that fit and more than plenty that will fit - summer and winter - as the low carb and activity kicks in. :D

I read that article too! It was thought provoking. I'm the same as Seasidegal58 - got clothes in all different sizes  I don't buy new clothes that regularly and tend to wear everything to death BUT still do have too much. I think when I unpack (still not done that yet :rotfl:) I'll have another go through and see if I can CS some.

Redo, you have given me another incentive to lose weight. My smaller clothes will take up less space :)

  • I like to think about what I buy or accept too as it can easily become clutter. As soon as you have more than you need then the clutter can grow.

I prefer to buy quality clothes that last longer and have less of them. I try to limit the colours to make sure that I can mix and match together which I think means that you're more likely to wear what you've got.

It is tough when you have clothes in all different sizes. I tend to offload them to the charity shop after a few years as I feel that if I haven't worn them all that time then I probably never will :).
