We have been trying to get my parents to move from SKY+ to SKY HD because of more storage space etc but my dad doesn't seem to be for moving.
You see he has programmes recorded on his box which aren't shown anymore and they aren't on YouTube etc (we've searched)
I have spoken to sky and I mentioned the USB slot on the boxes but I've been told they are there for no reason/use
Any ideas anyone? Thanks

No PVR is designed for long term storage. Either watch the programmes or copy to DVD. If the HDD fails all will probably be lost anyway. I have had two non Sky PVR's HDD's fail this year alone.0

Thanks, how would he copy from sky+ box to DVD? Just out of interest.0

No sorry he hasn't got a PVR he has a sky+ box and I'm trying to get him over to SKY HD
The programmes he doesn't want to lose are the ones on his sky+ box0 -
Sky+ is a PVR, if the Sky HD has a HDD it is also a PVR.0

Ahh ok, sorry. I didn't know that.0

The only possible way for that is record it to a writeable DVD while playing the programme back in real time and for obvious reasons that's not usually realistic.
If he really doesn't want to lose his recordings then he has to stick with the Sky+ box.
What are the recordings? Are they not available on DVD?0 -

Use the SCART connection out to a DVD recorder ?
Something like this - https://www.amazon.co.uk/Panasonic-DVD-Recorder-Freeview-HDD/dp/B015341TLG/ref=sr_1_1?s=home-theater&ie=UTF8&qid=1501415459&sr=1-1&keywords=%22dvd+recorder%22
However, not a cheap solution as you would need some sort of HDMI-SCART convertor as well as the recorder.:(0 -
Colin_Maybe
I think it's things like programmes that's have been on Sky Arts with (I'm guessing here) maybe something with Tony Bennett? and Amy Winehouse recording music
The other one is something like How's it made? He is a civil engineer and they did a bit where they went down to his workshop and did some recordings. We've trowelled through the internet to try and find the particular shows/recordings but it's like they've disappeared. The above 2 are just a couple of them!0 -
BrewerDave,
Thanks but ouch! Think I'll just have to accept he's not for moving!
I even suggested setting up his iPad infront of telly and do it that way. But we could be waiting a while as he said 'I'll think about it' quite a while ago!0 -

HDMI tends to have copy protection on it via Sky so the only way you'll be able to copy it off with SCART. It doesn't have to go to a DVD, it could in theory go to any device with SCART input such as a VCR.
The USB ports on Sky boxes do nothing, save for the wireless mini adaptor that probably only works on Sky+HD anyway.
With regards to the programmes in question, often if you go to the production company you can sometimes get direct copies of an episode from them but it depends on the arrangements made with the channel it was made for, plus this may not be cheap. How It's Made was originally a Canadian production by or for the Canadian Discovery Channel but the UK inserts will probably have been filmed by a crew here.0
