"We have 3 very well behaved 'clean' cats who know where the litter tray is and that have NEVER had an accident even when ill."

And when your cats become older and start having "accidents" do you have them put to sleep or accept that it is part and parcel of owning and loving a pet?.

I had a tenant whose elderly & incontinent cats caused £1600 worth of damage. She loved her cats and they were well looked after. Still caused damage though.
  • Oh my goodness!
We unfortunately had to go through the absolute hell of having our young cat (not quite 11) put to sleep just over 2 years ago.

If it's ok with you, I'd actually prefer to not think about going through this again just yet thank you.
We are responsible pet owners and if something needs addressing then it will be done at the time. I'm certainly not going to think about it right now.

How about an elderly person who is 'incontinent' would you put them to sleep if it was available? Our cats mean the absolute world to us and their best health and care are in our best interests.

    Morning all,
So firstly I just want to thank everyone for all their comments. Honestly, it helps me out so much.
It's a very stressful time with such a little problem in the way that it's good to hear different sides of the story (both from tenants and landlords). So thank you all so much.
The key is to find the correct litter as we have been in people's houses where they go for the 'cheap' stuff and it absolutely stinks to high heaven.
Our cats get treated like absolute royalty and have the best of everything (they even eat better than us)!
Wishing you all the best, whereabouts in London are you looking for? x

Agreed, won't be skimping out on the litter that's for sure!!
We do work long hours atm but we will make sure everything works out for the kitties too. They're my world so I'll make sure they're just as happy as we are to be starting a new life in a new home! :)

And South East, that's all we can really afford for getting to work! :rotfl:

    Agreed!! :T
  • Sorry Kittylah, I'm unable to do quotes on my phone. Ahh your kittens sound lovely!!
Yep, we only ever use Catsan (we have a princess diva who will refuse anything else) lol!

London is a nightmare! We're in Dartford so not too far really. x

    I'm not going into it.

My post was not intended to frighten or annoy.

The original poster was asking why landlords are reluctant to let to tenants with pets. My post was an explanation of why I don't allow pets (although practically there is nothing that can be done after the tenant has moved in).

How about an elderly person who is 'incontinent' would you put them to sleep if it was available?

    I find that remark offensive.

I've owned cats for most of my 64 years. Never had any door frames destroyed. We bought our cat a scratching post which HAS been very badly treated but that's what it's there for :rotfl:

So let me get this right, you have replied to my comment and said you didn't mean to 'frighten or annoy' me but your offended about my comment regarding an elderly person? Why would is there even a difference? A cat is a living being as well as a human. I can guarantee if euthanasia was available for humans I'd be all for it. My grandad was a professional ball room dancer who played golf everyday. He died from MND! There was nothing wrong with his mind but his body let him down and failed so he suffered a horrible death!!

Why out of interest didn't you bill your tenant with the £1600?

I have had cat(s) for decades. If they mess up I clean it up.., on the rare occasion there is a problem because of illness. Bleach on hard floors or vinegar and bio washing liquid on carpet. Never had a problem with a smell or a complaint. I hate cat smell lol.

Its not the cats that are the problem, its the owners willingness to do what's necessary. I'd suggest allowing a LL to see where you live now so they can see you aren't going to be a cause of damage.

But there are LL's who don't want people on benefits, people with children, people with pets etc.

Have you tried OpenRent - I think they allow you to specify when searching properties for properties that don't say 'no pets'.

Because a human being and a cat ARE NOT THE SAME THING.

I did, it took two years and a court case.

A responsible person will pay for their pets. They will pay for themselves. An irresponsible person will try and wriggle out of both.

A landlord wants a responsible person in their home. As such if you show willing, approach them directly, offer extra pet deposit and carpet cleaning, this shows you are responsible and IMO puts you a 'cut above' a number of potential non pet owning tenants. People cause plenty of damage too.

As long as you accept you may need to pay a bit more for the privilege I'm sure you will find somewhere.

Don't be too put off from adverts from letting agents. They pretty much all seem to put "no pets" on the adverts just to try and make their life easier.

I was considering a pet in a rental, the agent allegedly spoke to the landlord and told us no. We were living there already, and the previous tenant had two huge dogs that we had to clean up after. I got the landlords details and asked directly - she said it would be fine. Didn't do it in the end though!

So just thought I'd post an update,

Regardless to all the tips and opinions I've been given, spending hours and hours on the phone/emailing places, I'm still having no luck.
I'm constantly being rejected... and even had one that was perfect with a cat flap installed, landlord firmly then said no pets. _pale_

I'm trying to be fair, I'm happy to pay extra but am getting no where.
So yeah, shall keep trying but I'm still failing miserably and getting a bit scared if I'm honest. :(

Thanks again for all the words guys, shall update again soon!
